This man amputated his own arm in order to survive. Aron Ralston is a mountaineer who was hiking alone in the Canyonlands National Park in 2003 when a boulder fell and trapped his right arm against a canyon wall. He had no cell phone, no one knew his exact location, and he had limited water and food. For five days, he tried to free himself by chipping away at the rock with a pocketknife, but to no avail. He realized that his only chance of survival was to amputate his own arm. Using a tourniquet and a dull blade, he cut through his flesh, nerves, and bones, and then rappelled down a 65-foot cliff to find help. He was rescued by a helicopter and taken to a hospital, where he recovered from his ordeal.
