If you get a flat tire in the iCar, you must replace all 4 tires because they only come in a 4 pack.

Investors calling their tech startup “Millet” and then subsequently being listed as an agricultural company by confused stock market managers is the most Chinese thing

There is an error: the first batch of Xiaomi SU7 cars was not produced by BAIC. All Xiaomi vehicles are manufactured by Xiaomi itself. However, at that time Xiaomi had not yet obtained automotive production certification, so it utilized BAIC"s production qualifications.

Apple Car Options:

200 KM Range - dollars
250 KM Range - 150000 dollars
350 KM Range- dollars
500 KM Range - dollars. Charging Cables needed to be purchased separately. ABS, Airbag, Brakes, Steering functions are part of monthly subscription plan. and so on.

EDIT: Tim Cook: Apple also inventing new electricity that will change the world. AACDC(Apple Alternating Direct Current) 1099 Volts, 2099 Hz. Of course, every thing needs a subscription, Apple Insurance and Apple Accessories, Proprietary connectors, screws, etc. This is just a parody. LOL!! Do not take it seriously.

Now this is storytelling done well... He gave you the historical background of the founder, the environment for the company at key points, the connection with buyers and then the connection to a company synonymous with profit.

Apple died with Steve. I worked near where Apple was testing their car concept (some were prius with lidar). They gather data for years... For nothing. Their profits now make them the same 1 pony company compare to the other phone makers increasing their revenue mix to become a long-term value company.

you shoudl also mention that Lei Jun is the angel investor in all the top EV startups in China. so he is pretty 'invested' in the space for a long time

If you have a Apple car you need to buy your own Charging station with special plug…

One of the biggest differences between Lei Jun and Steve Jobs is that Lei Jun first came out of the software industry, and he brought the experience and intuition he accumulated in the software industry into the manufacturing industry.

32:40 In fact, the Xiaomi SU7 has always been manufactured at Xiaomi's own factory. However, due to China's stringent regulations on automotive production qualifications, Xiaomi initially failed to obtain the necessary license to produce vehicles. With support from the local government, Xiaomi utilized BAIC's production credentials to manufacture its cars. After delivering 30, 000 units, Xiaomi successfully secured its own automotive manufacturing qualification.

Xiaomi is also a force in some European countries. Their phones, air purifiers, scooters are popular in Poland (where I live). A lot of malls have their flagship stores

Even their first budget phones had a similar story here - it was the value phone of tech savvy college students ~10 years ago when Chinese phones were still niche in Europe

one major event in Leijun's career is missing here, He started an online book store called joyo in 2000 and sold to Amazon for 75M in 2007. it is considered a major reason for his resignation from kingsoft and starting of his investing career.

12:05 What a coincidence. Xiaomi lost its supply of AMOLED displays 10 years ago because of a conflict between a subordinate and a senior executive of Samsung Semiconductor China, and Lei Jun had to personally apologize to this Samsung executive.
And just yesterday, Samsung boss Lee Jae-yong just visited Xiaomi's car factory with Lei Jun.

Xiaomi is the OG in connecting with their customers. They're ultra transparent with their fan base back in the day with blogs and focus groups and update their phone features based on community feedback. They've done the same with cars as the founder himself posted on social media the progress with the car as it was developed and the test driving experiences. You can find clips on social media of the founder stunt driving, drifting the car in circles on a frozen river to show off the car's handling capabilities. So when he says he's all in, he's really ALL IN.

2/3rds into the video, I was so invested in how Xiaomi raised itself up selling smartphones that I forgot the crux of this video 😅 This video had me wanting to buy a Xiaomi Air Purifier. Best ad for Xiaomi and a great video!

Definitely worse for $AAPL but probably best for the common man that Apple did not make an EV - couldn't imagine paying a subscription fee to run my car after having 'bought' it on an EMI, almost as if they'd control my entire life... wait a second

I remember seeing the buzz about Xiaomi phones on XDA. Got a Mi 2S when I went to China in 2013. Even among people I met there and tried to figure out more about the company (relatives, friends of relatives, work acquaintances) only one other super tech nerd was excited about Xiaomi--everyone else I met back then dismissed it as a shanzhai brand even though Xiaomi already had a great international community of fans of custom Android roms by then. They won a lot of hearts and minds with their relatively inexpensive (for the time) air purifiers during a period of great public anxiety about air pollution; at the time there were air purifiers being sold for several thousand RMB and cheap kits of furnace filters+bungee cord+box fan (though to be fair, iirc this kit design was meant to be affordable and effective) with nothing substantial in between. Not a few years later, they have TVs and their own TV boxes serving their licensed content to their TVs, some commuters using their segways to get to work in the mornings, and robots and ricecookers. Thinking back, they helped change the perception around how design, quality, and price intersected.

When you consider how anti-consumer Apple is when it comes to repairs, it's actually a GOOD thing that they've stayed out of the car business.
"Sorry, your five year old iCar is considered vintage hardware, and we no longer do repairs on those. You'll have to buy a new iCar instead, for the low low price of $120, 000 (plus tax)"

How could you skip to play "Indian fans, are you OK?" With such an extensive video on Lei Jun and Xiaomi

It’s crazy how China can go so fast while American and European car manufacturers take decades. Mercedes was testing EVs in the 80s. I guess it’s a combination of government and industry and so many people with relevant education.

Dude you are a great storyteller. I always get to a point in your videos where I'm so incredibly invested - breaking out into a big smile when the person / company of the week makes a successful decision, or cringing with despair when they get it wrong - and I have to sit back and think, man why do I care about any of this?! It's all in the build up, the research, and the delivery.
