Once again Saqqara reveals more of it’s hidden secrets to us, as archaeologists on a different site in Saqqara have found some absolutely incredible find.
Sunday January 17th Egypt unveiled another trove of treasures found at the Saqqara Archaeological site, included among these treasures are 3000 year old sarcophagi.
These artefacts were found near the Pyramid of King Teti, The first Pharaoh of the 6th Dynasty of the Old kingdom.
As you can see on this photo, this new site is located close to the famed Step Pyramid of Djoser, but it’s further away from it than the site I reported about in October and November.
A team led by the famed Egyptologist and former minister of antiquities Zahi Hawass has found 54 sarcophagi in burial shafts dating to the New Kingdom which lasted from the 16th century BCE until the 11th century BCE.
A total of 22 shafts have been uncovered, in one of these shafts the archaeologists found a Soldier with a battle axe beside him.
Hawass said: “This discovery rewrites the history of Saqqara and more specifically the history of the New Kingdom, which began 3,000 years ago,”
He told the reporters at the Saqqara necropolis that archaeologists have unearthed the funerary Temple dedicated to Queen Neit, the wife of Pharaoh Teti, first king of the 6th dynasty.
A stone sarcophagus was found and they have found an almost 5 meter long Papyrus with texts from the book of the dead, this included a collection of spells aimed at directing the dead through the underworld in Ancient Egypt.
They found masks, statues, wooden boats, pottery, a stele and games the ancient egyptians used to play as well at the site.
One of the games they had found was Senet, which is placed in the tomb so the dead could play on in the afterlife.
Those who win at Senet “will go to the other world, to the field of Aaru, the paradise of Ancient Egypt” according to Hawass.
Many skulls and bones were found as well and shown to the media on sunday, while excavations are ongoing.
Mister Hawass told the reporters that at least 70% of this new area is still to be explored in the future, they’ve found an amazing collection of artefacts already, but I’m very excited to see what else they will find.
Saqqara has more than a dozen pyramids, ancient monasteries and animal burial sites, it’s a vast necropolis of the Ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and a UNESCO world heritage site.
For more than a decade there have been excavations in this area close to the Pyramid of Teti, for archaeologists to finally find the funerary Temple of Queen Neit is incredible.
This is all the information that has been made available to us at this point, I will of course report on new information coming out as soon as possible.
If you would like to know more about the previous new discoveries in Saqqara you can click the card in the upper right corner, or click the playlist in the endcard or in the description down below.
I’ve made a deep dive about the fames Step pyramid of Djoser and the funerary complex surrounding it in the past, that will be linked in the description and in the endcard as well.
