I don’t use a pin at all I just shove a few #2 pencils through the receiver. Has never failed me 😉

a pin just sat sprung on the outside OR the pin literally inside the hitch with less spring tension?
if it tries to slide out it becomes more sprung, thus staying in situe.
if its under tension on the outside, vibration and such will eventually cause it to unspring itself
