What I really love about the series is how it shows how much the abuse harmed not only zuko but asula as well.
She was broken to pieces and rebuild in her fathers image, never allowed to be anything else.

Zuko and Azusa were held to a higher standard. Zuko especially since he’s Azusa’s older brother. He sees his son as squandering his birthright. He favored Azusa because she took after him whereas Zuko took after his mother. Given what Ursa was capable of, it makes sense that even then, Zuko should have learned from her example. His sis fade came from the Zuko’s refusal to be ruthless.

IMO, Ozai was mostly referring to the personality diff than skills, as Zuko has father issues and Azula has a severe case of mother issues.

But the thing is Ozai isn't even Zuko's father. Before marrying Ozai, Ursa (Zuko's mom) had been in love with a man named Ikem who had already proposed to her, which she happily accepted. But Fire lord Azulan had been searching for a person from Avatar Roku's bloodline since he believed that arranging a marriage between the two families would result in a powerful bloodline, and Ursa being Roku's grand-daughter was offered a proposal from Ozai. Ursa bitterly accepted the proposal for the sake of her family and broke up with Ikem. She never got over Ikem and tried secretly sending letters to him. In one of the letters, Ursa confirms that Zuko is Ikem's and not Ozai's. Ozai does find out about this, which is why it was so easy for him to not only challenge his "own son" to an agni kai and leave a horrible memory for him but to also banish him altogether.
