I love projects like this! However, I'm happy to live vicariously through you. I bought a plug-in Prius two years ago which, despite is minuscule battery, I get 2, 5 L per 100 km with. It's charged from our solar panels, so the "fuel" is cheap.

Drilled and slotted breaks actually brake WORSE, unless you intend to be heat cycling them with heavy track use. The real upgrade would be to swap for Corolla, or Matrix brakes.
