One thing that is often forgotten or otherwise not discussed is the point of a bug out bag is to get you from point A to point B and if need be to point C as quickly as possible. You're not going out into the woods with your bug out bag to wait out whatever this disaster is unless your bug out location happens to be a secluded cabin in the woods. And if you can once you have your bug out route planned out and if the journey warrants it consider trying to set up some supply caches along your route so you can replenish any supplies you'll be consistently going through like food, water, drink mixes, etc.

And if you can make sure that your bug out location is going to have plenty of supplies to hold you over until you're able to go back home. And when selecting a bag don't get one that's too big because otherwise you're just going to be tempted to fill it up and that's just not something you want to do. Also don't fall into the trap of having 2 fixed blade knives or a fixed blade knife and a folding pocket knife in your bug out bag. People love to say that two is one and one is none but quite frankly I just don't see how that really holds true nowadays. If you have a good multi-tool and a good fixed blade knife then you are set as far as needing cutting tools.

Also make sure to go out with your bug out bag once in awhile and test your gear as well as learn how to use it. Also try and teach yourself to do as much as you can with as little gear as you can.

Also take your bug out bag out of the closet or wherever you have it and go for a hike with it. Get a feel for the weight and if need be once you finish your walk go through your bag and figure out what you could possibly take out of it to reduce weight and that you could do without.

If you decide to go with a bag that happens to have some Molle on it don't hang anything on the outside of the pack unless you absolutely have to or if you have something like a tourniquet, med, or trauma kit affixed to the outside but even then.

Also consider packing a bag full of supplies for your pet. If you have a dog who is able to carry their own saddlebags loaded up with supplies of their own then all the better.

Very good man, i think splitting up the difference in a "get home bag" 72 hour bag" is a big deal, weight is bad, have skills vs 75# bag with the kitchen sink, 72 hours, basic shelter, few fires, granola bars and good shoes. bug out whole different element all together.

The Boy Scouts have many items that go well with a bug out bag. Many of these items are relatively inexpensive and easily accessible and available for purchase . If you have a Boy Scout store nearby that's your best bet, other than that, garage sales are the best alternative. The essential Bob items that you are looking for are; messkit, utensils in a pouch, canteen, and a bandanna with first aid information on it. Also any bandanas that have animal foot prints on them.
