The system was leaking air because the membran in your regulator wasn't aligned perfectly. Pressing the button on your regulator should fix the problem. The wheel on the side of the regulator is used to regulate the breathing-resistance, If there is no button on your regulator (illegal) rotating this wheel can help aswell.
Always open the tank up full and close it 1-3 turns, this will stop the ventil from wedging (it won't burst lol).

Rule 101 of ice diving is not to breathe off the demand valve before you go under, as condensation can cause a free flow because the internal valve is iced over & stuck open. So you just have to test it underwater by breathing near the surface. Did nobody know to spit in the diving mask & rub it all about, to help prevent condensation??

Despite what most people would think being in the water is actually one of the safest places you could be in Chernobyl in most circumstances because water is such a great radiation moderator it's why it's used in nuclear reactors to control the fusion reaction and why you can't use wireless communication underwater it's just so good at absorbing that energy because of how densely packed the molecules are

I have been lucky and got to visit there with a few friends.
And I can say this. No matter where your at there might not be any readings then a big spike. It’s playing with danger.
Although water is a good shield what there in really can’t be considered water.
