Great info Nina.. 😅 So MANY crosses and new names.. 😂 It can drive you crazy at times just trying to figure it all out. Nice and cool the last couple days, but windy and PG&E does thier routine of shutting off power to prevent the lines from starting fires😠 Why they don't just fix them or trim trees as required is beyond me. They'd rather pocket the money instead of doing the job they claim they've done, and still they haven't paid for all the damage from fires caused by them from yrs back..!!! But they sure are quick to raise the rates... 😫 Have a great weekend Nina....

🦒💐💕👌 These days there are several Apps that give you a plant Id with just a click. I never tried it but my sister in law uses it a lot when she is in doubt of a weed or even trees or bushes. Although Apps may do the job when it comes to common terrestrials I pretty much suspect it won't be that easy with orchids, especially the hybrids or even species other than Phals or Cymbidium. Anyway, I am just saying because in fact I never bothered to try ❤ 🤗😘😘

Very helpful 'how-to' post! Sometimes even using the same sleuthing techniques as you, I come up either blank or conflicted. In that case, I'll write a tag with the closest match and a large question mark. Eventually, I pick up the trail once again, sometimes when repotting rolls around months later. In the time elapsed between searches, new pics may have been uploaded, and my results improve.

Something else I've realized is that these no-ID orchids are often those I pick up on impulse from mass-market venues like supermarkets. So then what? Thinking about how the industry operates, new mass-produced orchids tend to hit the market in waves, appearing across the EU in my case. The majority having been bought and grown on by the thousands in the Netherlands where the main wholesale producers are. So I then search the website for those production companies and often end up with the ID. (Not always, but often).

It used to be part of my job to identify fish that came in that weren't on the invoice or were clearly mislabeled. Funny how that ended up helping me in the orchid hobby. One thing I will never understand, though, is how some people can confidently state that something is X orchid and when you look it up and compare it, the two don't really look anything alike. I suppose I'm a little jaded since I can tell the difference between wild Green, Blue and Brown discus which look the same to 99.9% of people.
Now, another trick to try to identify an orchid is to look at the online shops. Petrens, when they were still in business, were a godsend when trying to ID orchids in the EU. They clearly bought from the same suppliers as the supermarkets and garden centers but theirs had an ID which was lacking in the supermarket purchases. It isn't as easy to find the ID now that they are gone, but you might get lucky on one of the EU sellers sites.

I would recommend doing what @HerebutNot does with his orchids: if you got it as a no ID, put c.f. on the label in addition with the ID you think it is - not only does this remind you that it's a best guess, should you then go on to sell/trade/share that orchid others will know that too. (It's latin for 'compare with or something like that).

It's interesting that you pick a Miltonia & mention _sunset_ ... There are two Miltonia Sunsets (sort of), Miltonia Sunset (Miltonia regnelli x Miltonia Goodale Moir) and Milmiltonia Sunset (Miltonia Goodale Moir x Milmiltonia Norma MacRae), with Milmiltonia Norma MacRae being (Miltonia regnelli x Miltoniopsis Bellingham).

Now, these are two *different* hybrids but share a lot of the same parentage, and do in fact look very similar. *They are often mislabelled as each other* (usually the Milmiltonia labelled as Miltonia)... basically if it has the waterfall pattern it is Milmiltonia (since this is a Miltoniopsis trait, coming from the Miltoniopsis phalaenopsis ancestor of Bellingham), and without it's the Miltonia.

And this is the problem with searching online, people repeating the misidentification that other growers have already made... I can't tell you the number of times I've seen on forums people fielding 'Sharry Baby' for any vaguely red oncidium type with a vaguely pleasant scent. Or indeed 'Twinkle' for any small flowered scented oncidium. Or if it smells like chocolate then it *must* be Sharry (not the case).

I bought a no ID recently, pleasant scent sweet + catholic church incense, red.... the first suggested ID ( _even after I put in my post it's definitely not Sharry Baby_ )? You guessed it, Sharry Baby. The blooms are huge, it's 100% not Sharry. It might have Sharry in the parentage or share some of the same parents (I think it's highly likely to have sotoanum in the mix somewhere), but I have for example Oncidium Heaven Scent (has Sharry as a parent) & sotoanum, & I've seen Sharry Baby in the flesh so I know it's not Sharry. I think it's something (formerly) Wilsonara-y, but not found and ID for it yet.

The more popular a particular species is for breeding (onc tigrinum types, onc sotoanum/cheirophorum types, onc alexandrae/nobile types, miltonia spectabilis types, etc) the more confusing the IDs become because many of the offspring end up looking similar and misattributed IDs happen all the time, & that's before you factor in the occasional mis-labelling too (which surprisingly people cling on to for dear life sometimes, even when you point out it can't possibly be the ID they have), and the unregistered hybridisation which seems to be on the increase.

Whilst somewhere like OrchidRoots is a good resource, it should not be treated as gospel - it has errors (incorrect parentage sometimes & misattributed IDs to some photos). Always double check the parentage with the RHS International Orchid Register.

I would add that as an ID technique, when you think you have an ID, look at the parents - does your hybrid have any of the traits of the parents? E.g. if both of the parents are scented, then it's very likely that the offspring will also be scented, if yours isn't then you might not have the right ID.

I bought an orchid that don’t have an I’d so I post the picture of my orchid bloom on The American orchid society group and one of the individual who viewed my post gave me a name which she think that’s the name of it, I goggle it and sure enough it was the right I’d. The name she gave me is Acealara Sunday’s best muffin. Who would think of a name of an orchid like that. Anyhow know now that my plant has an I’d but not 💯 % sure so I need to get with my orchid society group President or who have more knowledge about orchids before I can put an I’d on it.
