The zionists knew and openly declared that they were invading and confiscating other people's land, for example:

Moshe Shertok, Israel's first foreign minister said in 1938 "We have not come to an empty land to inherit it, we have come to conquer a country from the people inhabiting it."

Indicating clear, early knowledge that Palestine was host to a well populated and thriving society, Israel Zangwell, close lieutenant to T. Hertzl said in 1905: "Palestine proper already had its inhabitants and the province of Jerusalem is already twice as thickly populated as the United States, having 50 souls to the square mile and not 25 percent of them jews."
