The magma of volcanoes also varies which is what can often determine how violent eruptions can be. Quiet volcanoes like Mount Kilauea have a very runny magma called basalt. Usually, gasses trapped in the magma escape gently when it reaches the surface. This means that there isn’t an explosive or violent eruption often. But the magma in some larger volcanos like the super volcano in Yellowstone have completely different magma. It contains larger amounts of a substance called silica, which can trap and combine large amounts of explosive gas into the magma. As the explosive gas builds up, so the explosive pressure increases. Eventually once the pressure gets too high, the magma erupts. And in the case of a super volcano, it could produce an explosion equivalent to being 50x bigger than the Tsar Bomba. That being said, there also needs to be enough molten material below to trigger such a large eruption. So it’s unlikely any super volcano like Yellowstone will erupt in our life time. And even if one did, it would most likely be a tame flow of rhythmic lava, not a large catastrophic eruption event.
