The Truth Behind Kids Reading Ability

The idea that kids need to be ready to read by age 7 is a myth, despite what schools enforce.

Research shows that kids develop at different paces, and there is a wide range of normal development when it comes to reading and other academic skills.

Some kids may start reading at a young age, even before age 7, while others may take more time to develop their reading abilities.

Pressuring kids to achieve a specific milestone by a certain age can be counterproductive and often leads a negative attitude towards learning. I saw this as a teacher over and over again… kids who were forced to read before they were ready did not want to read for pleasure anymore.

A much better approach is to provide a supportive and nurturing environment that fosters a love for learning, encourages exploration, and allows kids to develop their skills naturally.

Reading readiness is a gradual process that involves a combination of cognitive, linguistic, and emotional factors. Early exposure to books, language-rich environments, and positive interactions with adults lead to a kid’s literacy development.

Parents should focus on providing opportunities for kids to engage with books, storytelling, and language-based activities in a way that suits their individual abilities and interests. This approach ensures that each child can progress at their own pace and develop a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

12...really, there is so much evidence supporting that kids should start reading by 5 LATEST.
This woman is obviously not even bothered looking and is just spouting her own opinion.

Yes don't stress kids into a box of 'you must do so-and-so by age blah'
But also make sure that they actually CAN do things in their formative years as that's when their brains are developing and things are literally easier to learn!
