Swallow is a common type of food in Africa especially Nigeria. There are a variety of this meal – eba, pounded yam also called iyan, fufu, also known as akpu, semo, tuwo, wheat, amala, etc. The name reflects how it goes when it is eaten, i.e. unlike most foods; it is usually swallowed, not chewed. Swallows are meant to be eaten with delicious soups like egusi, efo riro, ofe nsala, okra etc. plus a lot of meat and fish.

Nigerian swallows are traditional foods; therefore, there is a designed way to eat them. That way is to ensure your hands are clean by washing them in clean water before using your finger to scoop some morsel from the swallow and picking some soup to travel with it down your throat.
As much as you get to feel the texture of the swallow in your hand before your mouth when you use your finger and this allows you to know if it is smooth or lumpy. I have also found out that some people use cutlery to eat their swallow. Watch this video to know the reason for this and tips on how best for you to enjoy your swallow either as a Nigerian or a newbie, willing to be adventurous in the world of food.
