I've loved the RX8 since Need For Speed Carbon. Recently my wife bought me one. Sills rusted, 139k low compression. I've already chopped off the old sills and have new ones to weld in, I'm replacing everything, removing rust new engine etc. Like 14-15k at least. And you know what? Worth it. The emotional aspect alone is enough for me. Although it's not my daily so it's different. It's a project car. But I wouldn't trade it for anything

Love my 2005 RX8 and recently gave it a beautiful makover! Glad you are going to keep yours alive! I've just subscribed and look forward to watching the transformation.

I'm in the middle of restoring my 2004 RX8. Similar condition than yours, engine blown, sat outside for almost 3 years, so rust came up on the sills, and back wheel arches. I've just finished the front, subframe and everything that can be unbolted has been sandblasted and powder coated. Even the screws and nuts have been galvanized. But man, it's a lot of work.

I can relate to this I own two rx8’s both have phenomenal well taken care engines and I’m a mechanic so everything is done on time, but the rust is what the problem is on these cars

For the welding I'd recommend buying complete replacement sill panels.
They're still pretty affordable, and as you're planning to do the paint anyway it gives you the opportunity to make sure it's properly rust-proofed inside and out.

damn, here in Australia we never had to deal with rust or corrosion as its dry here, i cant imagine how much you guys in Europe have to deal with on a regular basis

I'm so glad you chose to restore your car! Your comment about the finality of the Renesis internal combustion engine seem to have been reenforced with the reveal of the Mazda Iconic SP at the Japan mobility show this week. I do hope you're wrong, and we get a true send off for all gas engines with one last, true, rotary sports car. Only time will tell.

Great video and can really understand your passion.

I had a 2005 rx8 dale colour scheme as yours. Loved that car and regret selling it. I mainly sold it because i wanted another convertible (had an mx5 before the rx8) but all the money from the car went into house remodeling 😅

Little late to the party but I recently got my 6-Speed 2005 Mazda RX-8 Shinka Edition and have started the restoration process and it’s been more then worth it

Do an engine swap SR20DET. The best you can do is partial repairs where you can still run it like you said phase by phase til you get an extra money.

I got an extremely rare 1 owner S2 in Canada for $2k, because a shop thought it had a blown motor, and it turned out they just flooded it...

In an Era where SUV dominate the sales, RX8 would crush the competition. Sport car with usability? Count me in

Currently in a similar position 😅😅. Bought an Rx8 in Feb, MOT failed and ran out in October. Main issue was emissions and some rust. I smell exhaust fumes in the car while driving sometimes. I'm not sure if it's due to damage of the exhaust pipe or somewhere in the engine.

Have you considered just getting a replacement engine with good (even) compression numbers? I always wonder if a rebuild if the most cost-effective way to keep these on the road.

I've also noticed your car is going from red to orange (mine does this as well). Maybe you could get some replacement panels (front wings, boot-lid...) to keep costs down.

Headlights are a nightmare to get new (and insanely expensive) :( .

Im guessing all of your suspension components and bushings are all toast. Frame rot. Yikes. Id find a cleaner 8 with less cancer. One of the 8's I owned was showing a little rust on the rockers. Underneath was a different storey. Once they start to show body rust. The hard to see areas are already toast.

Looking at the conditions of your car, in my opinion it is not worth it to fix it. The Rx-8 are still a burgain you can find a really good one quite cheep. Best thing you can do is to spend more money and buy a good unit. I bought mine with only 30.000km and I never had any single issue. Never buy a cheap one, it will be really expensive in the future.
