Hey Matt, how's it going? Great point! Well, I'm dating a girl who lives so far away from me and when I let people know that, they just get astonished because for them, we're not expected to go around like we do. I take three busses and three trains to get there (just like her do when she comes to visit me). She is also visually impaired and very smart girl. However, in february from next year I will bring her to live with me.

Hay after our chat to day I was talking to another friend and he pointed out something to me that I never thought before. We as in people with rp have an advantage over others who go blind suddenly as we get practice every night for when we do go fully blind. It really made me think how right he is in that statement.

I like how each alternative was presented as simply another option. In my experiences in the blind community sometimes there can be a bit of elitism about ways to do things. Sometimes unfortunately people can forget how it was to build skills and the levels everyone is at, and that one way is not the only way. Thanks for making this video

I'm glad someone else is doing this kind of videos, so if someone asks me, I'll just link them to this or other videos about it.
Thank you, Matt.

Hey there hope your day is going well. Loved the content of your video. Yes there are still taxis around the area but instead of paying over $20 to go 9 blocks I rather pay up to $5 in Uber or Lyft. Since my RP is stable and has great vision during the day I am able to get out and do things between 9am and 8pm during the summer and from 9am to 4pm in the winter. If I’m out after those hours I use Google Maps on my IPhone and always manage to get from point A to point B. Have a great weekend!

In the metropolitan Tokyo area, we can get to most places by rail and bus. The Japan Rail system has trained staff who upon request would escort me from the ticket gate to the train and find me a seat or a pole. When I get to my destination, another staff person will be waiting for me there, escort me off the train, and walk me to the ticket gate. If I need to transfer, they would take me to my connecting train. With this railway relay, blind people in Japan can pretty much travel solo anywhere. The railway staff radio each other so as long as I don't move to different cars, someone will pick me up when I reach my transfer or destination. In fact, I used this assistance today to meet a group of about fifteen other blind people and went on a field trip. Mariko

Hey Matt this is an awesome video it's very informative it answers many questions as to how a blind or visually impaired person gets around you mentioned orientation and Mobility or Cain travel orientation and Mobility and Cain travel gold together hand on hand some visually impaired people will receive orientation and Mobility without cane travel others will receive o&m training with Cain travel I've had orientation and mobility throughout most of my childhood all the way up to the high school not so much with Kane travel I was taught skills like familiarization to know the area that I'm in using landmarks as visual cues to help me know where I'm at or to help me find a specific areas that I might have to go to. I was introduced to many adaptive devices including the white cane let's just say I had a crash course that's why I know how to more or less use it. I have been trained on how to interact with a sighted guide there's a certain way that this is to be done. I try not to be out at night either although my night vision is not all that great either my depth perception is horrible so even though my vision is still quite usable there are times where I will use a sighted guide especially when it comes to Crossing very busy intersections for the traffic is just so congested and I'm standing there for more than 30 minutes trying to cross I will ask someone for help. Anyway the great video thanks for the info.

I like how your video made me think about this question from different perspectives. As an inexperienced VIP, getting around on my own is possible but very tiring even under ideal lighting. When I go into auto pilot, I get disoriented quickly.

As usual, another interesting, educational and necessary video. It is important to educate our community. Thank you for doing that. 👍

Hi Matt as you know I have not had formal orientation and mobility training. I want to travel is paratransit or friends for the most part. I use my cane to the best of my ability. It truly depends on the situation and the place that I'm traveling to how much I rely on a sighted guide. if I am very familiar with the place I do not 0 rely sighted guideas much as I would a place that is unknown to me or a place I have not been before. Thank you again for your videos Matt have an awesome!

I prefer to go out at night because I’m very light sensitive which restricts my vision even more than usual and even though my vision is a lot worse at night, I can see lights. So if I’m crossing a road I can see car headlights from further away than I would see a car during the day

I used my white cane as a signal that I’m visually impaired. Also, I use a white cane to make sure I don’t trip over curbs and uneven. I use my white cane when it’s foggy, rainy, and snowing. I sometimes don’t use it when it...

Great topic. I get the question all the time too. I think you should cover the proper technique and best practices for sighted guides. For example as a sighted guide you always want to get permission from the blind person. Also don't grip a pull the blind person along behind you. Allow them to grab on to your elbow so they can safely follow. Never use the white cane as a guiding tool either. I always say to a helper that I would like to grab on to your elbow to hopefully avoid the issues.
