If you go where there is no traction, stay there for a few seconds and rewind to a point where your still in the no traction area you will regain traction and you can drive up the mountain that way

You can get up higher on the hills when your just driving around in game, when it starts losing traction and begins to slide you back down the hill just hit rewind once and it will let you go up the snow capped mountains, it will let you go a fair bit higher on any hill until you hit the black screen (legitimate edge of map) and it will reset you back onto the road
