In the case of Union of India v. M/s Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.,
The Supreme Court recently ruled against the Railways in a case regarding overcharging of freight charges on Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). The court found that the Railways had imposed an illegal charge by considering a total chargeable distance of 444 kms instead of the actual relevant distance of about 334 kms. IOC had shipped furnace oil consignments via Railways between 2002-2005 along a specific route, and the freight charges were calculated based on the total chargeable distance of 444 kms according to the prevailing distance table. However, in April 2004, the Railways changed the method of calculating chargeable distance, leading to the need for revising distance tables by rounding off values.
