I'm not a singer or musician. I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket if my life depended on it, but I can't imagine life without music. I totally agree the message and the emotion in a song is the most important! Much more so than the "technique", as long as the artist totally commits to whatever technique or style they've chosen to use. And yes Layne's eyes were clearer here. His heroin addiction hadn't taken it's terrible toll yet. Such a shame, such a loss! Such a waste! At least his and the band's art lives on in recordings. They've influenced a lot of artists. It's really nice to see vocal professionals like you and others react honestly to artists outside the supposed mainstream of "proper" vocal technique without judgement regarding their chosen mode of expression. I learn a lot, which increases my enjoyment of multiple musical genres.

One of the greatest voices in rock/metal music gone way too soon. I miss him so much. Thank you Anna.

i only can say this "Layne" is him, nobody can compare with his voice, he is was so unique and a wonderful guy... shame that drugs did all that to him... he died alone on his house in 2002... but his music will live FOREVER, Thx you Layne, for all!!!! RIP Legend

The one and only Layne Staley. Alice In Chains was one of the coolest bands of the early 90s. They were just amazing musicians that created the kind of music that continues to endure all these years later.

Such an amazing singer. His singing was haunting.

When Layne nods and smiles at someone in the crowd in the middle of the song, my heart breaks a little. He seems to be so happy and content being on stage doing what he loves... knowing what's ahead for him, watching him literally high on stage just to perform for the unplugged concert...laying dead in his house for nearly two weeks before anyone even checked on him... everything about it is so sad and pathetic...I miss this Layne so much...

I think this is the first time I've heard Finnish spoken more than a few words. It actually have a very lovely sound.

This was Layne in his prime. This live version is better than the album version. His best live performance in my opinion.

To me this is one of the rare times the live performance, IS BETTER THAN THE STUDIO 🎙 RECORDING 😊

This lineup of Alice In Chains remains my favorite band of all time. A powerful song like this is a prime example of the haunting compositions they could craft during this era. Layne here is definitely so healthy and sharp and strong. This was before the struggle with substance abuse that he ultimately lost. But he was always a real star, even beyond any labels the press gave him or applied to his music. Even when caught up in his dark struggles, he could still shine so brightly.

How much power, how much strength and technique, Layne really was one of the best to ever walk this earthly soil.
Anna, I would like to see your analysis of Mark Lanegan's music, both in his solo career and in Screaming Trees.

I always thought his voice was very foreboding in this song. He paints a beautiful picture of pain with his voice and the black and white video is a perfect fit. Great reaction as always!

I moved to Seattle from Hawaii in 1989, my new friends asked me to go check out this band, called Alice in Chains. I thought what a weird name, and passed.
I kept being asked so I finally went. I was completely blown away. Live they were incredible.
Now, I feel fortunate to have been able to see them live and at their best.
I'm glad there are live videos to prove they were as great as I remembered.

You always hear about singers giving it their all, but Layne actually did give it his all. He had such a great balance of rawness and emotion and control...which all added up to beauty.
