Well, it's been a while, hasn't it? Welcome back to another Whiteboard Session, featuring the ever-present Ash!

Ash gives a basic understand of #BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) and well, how the #Internet works really!

Please do comment with your topic suggestions as we aim to bring you regular sessions at basic and more advanced levels!

Probably one of the toughest "task" in the industry, cramming up a very sophisticated protocol into such simple terms! Kudos!

I'd love to see more whiteboard sessions. Very informative and great explaination!

The "direct connection" he is talking about in 3:52 is called BGP peering. For example, ISPs peer with websites like Google or Facebook to speed up access to those sites in a certain country or region.

I've done CCIE Service Provider exam with this level of explanation of BGP. Thanks, guys!

Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is a routing protocol used to exchange routing information between routers in different autonomous systems (AS) on the Internet. BGP routers, also known as BGP speakers, use BGP to establish routing sessions (also known as BGP neighborships) with other BGP routers.

BGP routers exchange routing information in the form of BGP update messages. These messages contain information about the routes that a BGP speaker has learned, as well as information about the speaker's own AS. BGP routers use this information to construct a routing table, which they use to forward packets to their destination.

BGP uses a path-vector routing algorithm, in which each router keeps track of the AS path (the sequence of AS numbers that a route has traversed) for each route. When a BGP speaker receives a BGP update message, it compares the AS path of the received route with the AS paths of routes already in its routing table. If the received route has a shorter or equal-length AS path, or if the received route has the same AS path length but a lower BGP router ID, the speaker will install the received route in its routing table and propagate the update to its BGP neighbors.

BGP is an important protocol for the Internet, as it is the backbone of the Internet routing. It is used to connect different networks together and to ensure that data is delivered to the correct destination. However, it is a complex protocol, and misconfigurations or attacks can have serious consequences for the stability and security of the Internet.

I feel like been part of your data center. nice environment to work in. Love it.

I look forward to the IPv6 video. I have so many questions: how it all works in a LAN, how the translation to external addresses happens, how to check if the devices on your network are ready for ipv6, ...

BGP is an external routing protocol. It facilitates sharing of routes with the border routers of different autonomous systems (AS). This is different from an internal routing protocol such as link-state or distance-vector routing protocols which is used in routing within one AS. An autonomous system is a collection of networks that is controlled by one individual or organization, usually multinational companies or large ISPs.

Thats a cool drawing board. Where can I get one?

Yes, show us more whiteboard sessions! I would just like to say that it would be helpfull to show a brief diagram at the start to show where BGP stands in comparison to the other routing protocols.

Awesome video! Also would love to see the video Voor ipv6 and how bgp works in that case!

If you pointed out to time for advertising routes and choosing new path.
You know that BGP working and routing between As and it could be a Telco company or between countries. Sometimes it need more than 20 min to replace a route to an existing route. Reverse of link-state or distance-vector routing protocols.

BGP is pretty cool because it's the only path-vector protocol.

Excellent video! Very informative on BGP. I have to ask, what smartboard is that? Very curious

Reading Cisco manuals, could not explain this 100 pages later. Thankyou

Ash, love the content, looks like you have eczema and I was in the same place a long while back. Have a look at Dr Richard Aaron and Pomegranate Juice my friend. The pomegranate juice helps to cool internal heat which reduces the dry skin, and from Dr Richard Aaron I was prescribed Hydrocortisone + Bactroban which the usual doctors don't tell you about, and you need both for a fix. Hope it helps, keep up the great content.

In this day of snowflakes i am ready to be flamed. My opinion is your a fantastic entertainer. However in this video you look like your really struggling with teaching here. Relax and enjoy what you do. Thankfully you don't repeat everything like a lot people. I'm sure if you had a sidekick when making this video it would of been so much easier to digest. Nice to see a new video.
