Devon's Creepiest Woodland: Wistman's Woods On Dartmoor

The ancient oak woodland in Dartmoor National Park is mysterious and magical place because of the shape and appearance of the trees with their are oddly twisted and contorted branches. Their gnarled trunks, some of which are as old as 500 years, zig-zag skywards from between a bed of granite boulders with a blanket covering of evergreen moss.

It's claimed that locals refuse to enter the woods at night due to its reputation of ghosts and hauntings. The stories include reports of a phantom pooch known as Jumbo, a ghostly procession of phantom monks who walk and old track to the north of the woods, and a pack of supernatural hellhounds that are said to belong to the Devil himself.

Ah yes - I recall the eeriness of the woods, especially when misty. Worst was after the snows of 1962-63, when cattle and sheep had wandered into the wood and got their legs caught between the boulders. Even in late summer '63 there were still bones and skulls there.
Another tradition is that no-one can walk from one end of the woods to another... I did do most of it, but it isn't easy going, so I guess the legend is true.
There's mosses growing and hanging down - there's even small trees that seeded in the moss - a strange effect. So then, mysterious and magical it is...

I have to remind everyone that this is a sensitive habitat, and that videos like this are well and good to watch... but please bear in mind that this is fragile place. Collecting moss is illegal, and damaging the trees and the landscape is very detrimental. By all means walk around it, but please please stay outside. It used to be that only a couple of people a day would visit - now it's getting 400 per day. And don't think 'Oh, it's only me..."

I'm not sure if creepy is how I would describe the place. It felt mysterious and almost as if it was lost in another time and world of its own. I don't generally believe in ghosts or the past entering into the present. But Wistmans Wood definitely has a strange atmosphere and feeling to it which I certainly felt whilst there. I want to go back if and when I revisit Dartmoor which is magical in itself.
