DPS Students Discuss 'Signs of Suicide' to Save Lives

It's a tough topic for anyone, particularly for sixth graders. But it's also a topic that, when discussed in the right setting, could help students potentially save the lives of peers and family members in need.

'Signs of Suicide,' or SOS, is a program provided to middle school and high school students by the Denver Public Schools Departments of Mental Health and Assessment Services. The nationally-recognized program teaches students how to identify the symptoms of depression and suicide in themselves or in friends.

It also encourages students to seek help through the use of ACT, in which students acknowledge a 'sign,' care for the friend or relative in need, then tell another adult.

Students also take on topics like cyber-bullying, learning when and how to report a problem they see online.
