You know fossil fuels are having an adverse effect on our environment.
So, what do you think the solution is?
Yes, it is the usage of alternative fuels.
In our previous video, we spoke about types of alternative fuel called Natural Gas and Compressed Natural Gas.
In today’s video, we will be talking about Liquefied Petroleum Gas or also called LPG. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is a non-renewable source of energy, which is extracted by processing natural gas and refining crude oil.
LPG is also called cooking gas because it has various benefits over other fuels which makes it ideal for cooking purposes.LPG was first found by Dr Walter Snelling in 1912. He realized that natural gas can be compressed and stored under pressure. The very first LPG cooking stove was made in the same year.
LPG is mainly composed of propane and butane. In some countries, LPG is supplied just as propane, whereas it is supplied as propane-butane blends in other countries. At atmospheric pressure, LPG will be in the gaseous state.
Normally, LPG is stored in liquid form under pressure in steel containers, cylinders or tanks.
Liquefied Petroleum Gas has its own set of advantages. LPG doesn’t contain sulphur and is non-toxic. LPG doesn't produce harmful emissions like CO, NOx.T the calorific value of LPG is almost 80% to that of gasoline and the octane number of LPG is high. The cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas is also less when compared to gasoline. It almost saves up to 50% of money over gasoline. On the usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas, the engine life increases by 50%.
LPG has its own set of disadvantages as well. LPG vapour is heavier than air. In case of leakage, LPG vapour accumulates in a low lying area and is difficult to disperse. Liquefied Petroleum Gas is highly inflammable. High pressure is required for combustion of LPG. LPG does not blend well with other fuels. At full throttle condition, Liquefied Petroleum Gas will produce 10% less horsepower when compared to other fuels. As the storage tanks of LPG are huge, the weight of the vehicle increases.
In this video, with the help of a simple layout, we will also be talking about
how a typical LPG engine helps in generating electricity.
