'Why I Still Dual Boot Windows With Linux On My Desktop - A Discussion'

In this video I give my thoughts on Windows, and why I still dual boot it alongside Linux on my desktop.

My Main Reasons Why I Still Use Windows

1. Windows offers 99% compatibility with my game library, and I have many games that perform worse on Linux, the majority of these been DirectX 12 games, plus I have some games that do not work at all on Linux.

2. Since Windows 7, I have not experienced Windows rot, BSODs or malware infections and although Windows 10 and 11 have telemetry, I have no real objection to it.

3. My initial experience of Windows 11 has been positive although I am disappointed that direct storage and Android support was not available on day one.

In conclusion, Windows is probably the best operating system on the PC platform, and is nowhere as bad as some people make it out to be.

My two main machines triple boot OS's: Been using Macs since '91 so that's where I get most work done, Windows for both gaming and handy little utility apps not available elsewhere, and Linux because I'm pretty sure that's the what I'd like to be using in the future. However that choice to move to Linux eventually, is NOT about my convenience but about my concerns for issues like right to repair, ownership of my hardware, forced and planned obsolescence, wanting to support open source development, manufacturer supply chains (like Apple) using slave labour, spyware, malware, privacy and security etc. etc.

For now it's easier for me to build a hackintosh, have access to all the apps I have been learning how to use for years, than it is to try to bash a round peg into a square hole and use alternative apps on Linux. Not that it's not doable - it is, but the experience is still pretty clunky. That said, I've been very impressed that more distros are finally recognising they simply can't assume their users are up for grappling with the CLI to get stuff done - and the more they approach things from a "let's figure out how easy we can make it to use' perspective, the more users they'll attract and keep.

agreed 100%. I've used Linux exclusively for some months, but in the end I lost rather than gained with the experience --save the learning side of things, which was enriching. I studied programming and was used to Linux on the server side and using the terminal. I love Linux and all, but it's not there yet, despite fanboys saying Linux will dominate and bla bla bla. Maybe in the next decade or so, but then things will be different. I am using Windows 11 and pretty happy with it. If I want to use Linux I enable WSL 2.0 and for gaming you use DirectML with WSL 2.0 and you get low level access to all the GPU resources as in Windows, so yeah, the best of both worlds (I was dual booting, not anymore)

For Linux diehard fans, a GPU passthrough might be the best solution. Not an easy setup but you run Linux and then you launch Windows on a VM within Linux, then you get native speed and support for ALL your games. GPU passthrough requires 2 GPUs btw, but it works really well.

I have been running pop and windows on my gaming machine for the last month now. Did a little bit of tweaking to get it better at gaming but at this point on my hardware it's pretty close to parody with Windows. The way I break it down is almost all gaming on Pop, VR and productivity applications on Windows. The only reason I can't get VR working on Linux is just due to immature drivers and with valve currently working on releasing steamos version 2 I suspect that that will be a problem of the past.

I stopped dual booting, I connected my old Xbox one s and got gamepass. That's what I do now, instead of dual booting. But then a gaming desktop is wasting it's time on Linux. So I gave it to my lil bro. and I got his weak gaming rig. Now it serves me well with Linux! Gaming on Xbox one s and using Linux on my desktop. Win win

What about Windows Ghost Spectre? A lot of Linux users use Linux to get away from the bloat and Ghost Spectre is said to not have that. I haven't tried it yet but heard good things. Maybe you have an opinion on this.

Actually it like that if you are a hardcore gamer then just go with windows and if you are anything else but still game then go with linux

I won't go to Windows 11. Windows 10 is still a great gaming OS and I've managed to debloat it. Windows 11 seems another story about this. I'm also using ZorinOS and Arch Linux to make myself familiar with Linux.

Yet Win 11 needs a fix later this month as it creates a performance hit of around 15% on AMD processors due to latency lag in L3 cache.
