Surfing Wedging Slabs in Puerto Rico with Dylan Graves

How did all this weirdness begin? Here Dylan kicks off the season by revisiting the surf spot that first made him think differently about the waves we choose to ride. Isabela, Puerto Rico is a wild, side-washed beach-break that challenges most ideas of how to even take off. The island is rich with conventionally better waves, yet for Dylan and his buddies Aron Geiger, Carlos Cruz, Hector Santamaria and others, Isabela is their playground of choice. “Yes,” says Dylan at one point, “other spots were pumping. But I didn’t care! This is all I’ve ever wanted.” It’s also kind of their little secret. Yet decades of land exploitation in the area has put Isabela and other surf zones under threat, and it’s time to surrender the secret in order to save it. As Dylan says: “I’d rather share my favorite spot with everyone in the world, rather than lose it forever.”

Season 4 release dates:

Ep Two: The Baltic Sea live July 10th 4:00pm PDT

Ep Three: Fresh Coast live July 17th 4:00pm PDT

Ep Four: The Pororoca July 24th 4:00pm PDT

Secret Spot... So many stories... That's where I started surfing, I think near 1987... Always my summer spot... At first we use to park cars on the western cliff to be able to watch it from the peak. My car tires (Ford Laser) parked over pointy rock formations. Once, from the lineup I saw my hood open and 2 guys f' around. Caught a wave all the way to the channel and ran, they left and couldn't take my battery and who knows what else... After a while people parked behind the lost dunes or if u had a 4x4, over the top of dune entrances. So many times shared that lineup with Carlitos Cabrero and his bro, only. I think they had a Vitara (red?). We use to go a lot on Yellow 4x4 Suzuki a lot ...Carlitos Cruz shared lots of waves with us during our College years... I remember later on watching Dylan, Bryan and the other boys... Have not surfed for a while, but yesterday I pick some south coast little waves... The waves are calling me again!

I lived in PR for 3 years as a teenager in the early 80s. The people there are amazing! Hospitable and welcoming. It’s hard for me to watch anything filmed in PR because my heart gets sad.

The Secret Sport

I used to ride that wave in the '90s and early 2000s. Back in the early '90s, you had to bring someone who didn't surf just to watch the car because there were so many break-ins. There's a left on the other side of the beach that gets hollow with the right swell. The best way to get in was by jumping off the rocks or entering through the middle of the beach on the channel.

Dylan Graves, what you and your team are doing is fantastic. I remember the dunes; it's sad that the government doesn't care about our beaches. I recall seeing Brian and Dylan when they were just kids, surfing all over the place. I even remember one contest by the Puerto Rican Surfing Federation that Brian won when he was about 10 or 12 years old in the open surf. Keep up the great work! 🤙🤙

By far one of my favorite series to chill and unwind on YouTube. Love every episode in every season. I will be on the hunt to find somewhere unique in Japan 🤙

This was so so so sick and has me frothing. I also love the vibe all of these guys (and girl) give off. My mom grew up in Puerto Rico and learned to surf there. What an epic place to grow up!

Thanks to corrupt governments with 0 ecological conciousness to allow these places to be at risk. Certain places go beyond monetary value! Very cool Dylan saludos 🤙🏽

The idea that anyone looks at this and thinks “that’s surfable” is incredible. Huge props for your vision!

Rehabbing an ACL repair until the end of the year, this kept me going. Can't wait to paddle back out. Thanks for this, Dylan is the man.
