If you think about Onoki's old grudge (that was only explained with "war"), it kinda makes sense that he had a grandson that he lost - likely to war. He's lived through all of them. When his village was at war with the leaf, the Leaf was sending children like Obito, so it makes sense that the Stone village would too (especially considering the Leaf was - or should have been the stronger of the two)
