I've taught in PreK-2nd grade classrooms in South Korea, China and New Jersey before moving to Los Angeles in 2016 to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Shortly after arriving, I began substitute teaching in Burbank where I would bring my worn and trusty copy of Despereaux with me from class to class, reading a chapter or two each time I taught. The kids always loved it, and I quickly became known as the sub who read that mouse book with the funny voices. A librarian once told me said she always knew when I had been at her school because the next day she'd get flooded with requests for the book, which made me smile.
When Covid-19 shut down the district, I decided to start recording chapters for the classes I had been with who hadn't yet finished the book, and any other teacher or parent who needs resources for distance learning. Since uploading the first video, it's been shared widely and it's been amazing to get messages from students and families all over the world enjoying my crazy voices and asking for more books.
I try to keep my videos' production value as simple as possible on purpose - the less music and distractions they have, the more readers are able to focus on the story and let their imagination run free.
