Forget about holding torches in your left arm,
hold a shield
caves can be pretty dark,

Just a comment about mining at night:
At this point of the game, if you're mining under y0, then whether you mine morning or night essentially doesn't matter. This also applies to the older versions as well.
Minecraft spawning happens from bottom to top, not top to bottom. So even with the cap and the presence of mobs on the surface, it generally doesn't make a difference.
