I've had the movie first date multiple times. Two of them sucked for reasons other than the ones you mentioned. In one case the guy leaned over to kiss me at the climax of the movie (and his kisses were sloppier than my grandparents' dog). In another, it was the conversation leading up to the movie; I wanted to eat first; he wanted to see the movie first, so we went to the movie. Our tastes in movies were 180° apart. We were lucky that the only movie that we could possibly have agreed upon was having a surprise premiere at the theatre. Afterwards, he didn't want to go anywhere decent for dinner. He eventually agreed upon a diner, and there was a woman barfing at the bar (and he made it a point to point her out!).

OTOH, my current (and long-time) sweetie and I did dinner and a movie for our first date. That was more than 20 years ago.

My cousin told me about a friend of hers that was taken to McDonald's for a first date where, when they walked in, there was a cloth-covered table with candles, flowers, proper utensils, and china. They sat down, and a "waiter" came to take their order (it was a friend of his acting as the "waiter"), and their food was brought to them.

This is the one case of a fast-food first date that went well because of the spin the guy put on it.
