Run pick drills with my boys all the time. One is a catcher and I throw as hard as I can to him and try to spike it off the plate. He’s 10 and hates it, but if he sticks with it by 13-14 he’ll be a hell of a catcher

Glove flip in a game like that and you’ll be benched 🤣

Have to see the ball in. The kids are taking their eye off the ball but popping their head out. They’ll get better practice

I was first base in highschool and it was fun. I used a first base glove and it helped. Didn't drop many wild throws and never missed up a double play

As a 4 time district all star 1st baseman… This hurts.

More like "Coaches, TEACH your first baseman how to pick it, THEN theow him picks." The one in the middle at least had a clue.

Ok, so 2 out of the 3 had horrible glove position and the last kid bailed out on the play. Don’t anticipate the snap of the glove, that happens naturally when the ball is in. Not trying to be rude or anything, I played first base and Don Mattingly was my inspiration. Keep up the good work boys

My high school coach told us infielders to go to our positions but leave our gloves in the dugout. So we thought we were just going to do a run through. Nope, he proceeded to hit piss missiles at us with the fungo, and anyone who backed away from the play was called either a pussy or a bitch, by not just the coaches but also fellow players. It was fun, although you go home a bit sore obviously, but it taught us some good lessons. And I think it allowed myself to trust myself more in the Hot Corner after being successful without the glove.

Those boys really need some work. Not even bashing them... I actually wish I could work woth them in all honesty. Most coaches have to over see the entire team. Firstbase isn't one that gets specialized attention all that often..
I used to have a coach in my last few years who would stand mid way between first and second and hit hotshots at us w the fungo.. each of us would take a minimum of a hundred reps each practice. As soon as a kid sees there isnt anything about to be thrown hard enough to hurt in anyway off a bounce, there should be little reason to have a ball get by ya anymore after that.
If you dont get the out, it's one thing.. you may not pick at a rate of 100% but if you doubt for a second you can pick it, it needs to be blocked up. There's no excuse, at this age though, for an extra base to be gained as result of a bad throw getting by the first baseman. The bad play stops with You as a first baseman. It's our job to not allow a bad throw to result in anything worse than just a throw.

I used to get so offended when the kid behind me would get a couple innings of playing time (basically just to shut up his crying ass father). When that guy would let a ball get to the fence it would offend me on a personal level. I would take it like, I'm on this bench cheering for my guys and my infielders are being robbed because we need to keep one kid's dad from having a break down after the game 🤦‍♂️

sidenote: dont ever be that father.. little leagues are one thing but if you child is playing at any COMPETITIVE level of a sport... Do NOT find yourself earning your child PT. That kind of example only hurts them in life.

We would have been running poles for turning or heads away and missing it.😂

They need to be stretching out more in a straddle. They wouldn't of had a bounce if they stretched more

Boys need some serious pick practice.. my coach used to stand half or 2/3 the way between 1st & 2nd and hit one hop heaters at me with the fungo.. if you can't pick it, you certainly can't let it get past you to have to chase it down with a runner on the pads.. Gotta at least knock it down & kill it.
Damn sure not 3 times in a row.

Tighten up boys

That's pretty cool. I'm just an average man but I have an idea... Now the coaches should try and teach the kids how to make a pick like that and then throw them at them again see how they do. So many coaches today fail to coach the kids with instructionals, then repeat drills repeat drills repeat drills, then yell at them in the game-time situation when they're not sure what to do.

raise the bar. play hard or go home!!!

is there any actual tips to get better at picks or is just about losing fear of the ball? Reacting to short hops is the easy part, reading the long hops are the worst and always shoot out faster than you think

You want your elbow to be at a 12 and 6 position so if the ball bounces higher then your glove your arm can stop the ball from getting past you.
