Config 2024: From paper to pixels: why great ideas start on a napkin (Raphael Schaad)

Why do great ideas for designs and interactions often start with a sketch in a notebook or on a whiteboard? Sketching is approachable, it's flexible, it's focused. Raphael will show his process of combining paper with Figma and how to level up your design craft. He will then switch tack and highlight the shortcomings of paper — and how he has brought 10 years worth of analog field notes back into Figma and onto its infinite canvas to create a digital second brain.

Featuring: Raphael Schaad, Founder & Designer, Cron (acquired by Notion)

The 4 quadrant design file technique is fascinating and very intuitive, excited to give it try myself!

This is golden. Raphael is such a creative ✨I ordered a bunch of Field Notes notebooks right after this :)

Great talk! I found myself unconsciously divide the canvas in the four quadrants way and it just works! So glad I’m not the only one that like to put inspiration on the left, dump design draft on the top so they don’t get in the way, and having the components next to the designs so I can grab them anytime. Like the field note idea, I’ll do more work on the paper in the future!

This is a very important talk and let me explain why; The human brain is one of the most complex things in the universe. It took millions of years for the human hand and brain to reach their present coordinated stage. With the development of Artificial Intelligence, we risk losing this ability over the years because many artificial intelligence tools that make our jobs easier are being released day by day. We do not have to think about any subject for hours, days or weeks as before, and one of the consequences of this is to lose the brain and hand coordination that has developed over millions of years. In the developing internet world, there will come a time when you will not think like you used to and you will not work like you used to. We need to distinguish when and how effectively we can use artificial intelligence and our brain together to not lose the ability we have

Love the talk and the idea of paper notes. How long did it take to scan those written notes to Figma?

Wait did he say he manually transcribed all his field notes?? Insane
