I wish I could send you pictures of my squares from this yarn I am obsessed because I can fly through making the squares I finished a whole skein in a day and a half and had 15 squares and a baby square. I did have to use a different pattern for the granny square 😊

I think your African Flower adaptation is brilliant. I made one following your tutorial and was much happier with it than the usual granny square the label calls for 😊

My mom taught me how to do a granny square in 1968, and she did chain 1 between the shells and chain 3 to turn the corners — so I think that’s a very traditional, old-fashioned way to do granny squares. All the granny square tutorials I’ve seen online don’t use any chains between shells and only chain 2 for the corners, just like your preferred method. This more modern method makes a less lacy, more compact granny square. I’d even call them neater and more “tailor” looking. The old-fashioned granny squares are definitely hole-ier!
I think your hexagon grannies look fabulous!!
With mind-bobbling number of variations on granny squares, it’s interesting that Red Heart came out with a specialty yarn for grannies. Trying to come up with a solution to weaving in all those flippin’ ends is a heroic undertaking!j

Sounds like the pattern on the label is an old school granny square…that’s exactly how my grandma taught me to make them. The African flower is really perfect, though!! It’s going to be gorgeous! I crocheted a hippo once using that motif…maybe I need to make one for myself with this!

I like your African flower square a lot, and will try it !
Incidentally, I’ve been making the traditional granny squares, following the red heart instructions. Starting with a 4 1/2 inch tail and using an H 5.0 hook with relaxed but not loose tension each square has come out perfectly. The yarn is spun for this project and exact color increments. If used correctly with the right gauge, each square will always come out the same.
Enjoy !

In the fourth row of your African violet flower, if you chain two instead of just one in between the three stitches. you would probably end up with less extra yarn and also leave a big enough space in your final round with the black so you could see it better. This is such a beautiful looking motif and I am looking forward to trying it out. I just got my Red Heart Granny Square yarn today.

Finally! An honest review. Thank you. I have some on order. I'm 100% sure it won't work for me either. I make my squares nothing like the requirements. I turn at every round, no chain between clusters and only 2 chains on the 1st round. I'll try it their way 1st, do a vid the move on to something else with it. Thanks.

I was struggling with this too! Thank you for demonstrating how you use it. I was able to make the African Flower much easier than the granny square! I wonder what other motifs this yarn could work for!

I love how the African flower looks in this yarn. I may have to make a blanket like that.

I was finally able to get ONE square according to their pattern. Spent hours trying to make it work out. I've been crocheting for 50ish years, so i can control my stitch tension. Didn't like the square that it made. Big, floppy and holey. Love your squares - lots of potential if theres a built- in way to get the yarn to line up, like slip stitching for a few spaces.

One comment to help, especially for newbies. I work with Red Heart yarn all the time. The more you pull it out, the more it will stretch. Your solution of sl st around to the next space if you did not use up all the color in the row, is a great one.

Wow! Thanks for the video. I happened across it and I think the African flower does the yarn more justice. I will try one. 😁

I do love the African Flower pattern that you were able to create. I've never seen it before but I do like to learn new. It's beautiful. ❤
But I do see the problems you and others encountered. I have not gotten any of that yarn yet but I'm planning to soon.
Thank you so much for your time and efforts.
I'm so glad I found you and I'm now subscribed to your channel.
