Eye patches aren't just for covering a lost eye, some pirates wore eye patches so the would always have one eye adjusted for low light. This way they don't have to wait for their eyes to adjust, they just lift the patch.

Eye patches are commonly used by pirates not because their eye doesn't work, but because they need to get one of their eyes used to the dark so they could fight at night or in the cellar.

Here’s a fun fact, the old super Mario cartoon had toad in it and he actually smiled a few times revealing a full set of teeth.

I do like the idea of the first toad that Mario meets being captain toad it also explains why he knows a lot about his surroundings like the difference between poison and normal mushrooms even though it could just be a coincidence

I’m super late, but I figured I’d still explain this. Pirates often would wear an eyepatch even if they didn’t have a missing eye, or a damaged one, this was so that when they went below deck, all they had to do was pull up the eyepatch, and they had one eye that was already adjusted to the light that way they didn’t have to take the time to wait for their vision to adjust.

I think this Toad we see in the trailer WILL get the headlamp later, and BECOME the iconic "Captain Toad" we see in those games.

Plus, it would make sense to see Cpt. Toad's origin ALONGSIDE both Mario AND DK's origin.

The mushroom that toad thought would make Mario die is a reference to the poisonous mushroom which didn’t show up very often in Mario games, even though it wasn’t the actual mushroom and it didn’t actually kill him.

The redlight in the Dry Bones could just be a way to give them more depth, like how some had yellow eyes in the game.
