[LONG OUTPOST DAYS 2 - BACKSTORY] -

You stand at the edge of the dense forest, the leaves whispering with the wind, the scent of damp earth heavy in the air. You glance down at the crumpled map in your hand, tracing the inked line that leads to the facility’s hidden location. You’ve flown for days over this untouched wilderness, navigating the unmarked terrain, guided only by the whispers of your informant—a man you trusted with your life. You should’ve known better.

The plan was flawless, crafted with the precision of a master thief. Every guard, every sensor, every contingency was accounted for. But something went wrong. Someone got to him, twisted his loyalties, or maybe you never truly knew him at all. The ambush came swift and brutal, like a snake striking from the underbrush. Bullets zipped past you, shouts echoed in a language you didn’t understand, and you were forced to flee, bleeding and breathless.

Now, with nothing but the clothes on your back and the pack slung over your shoulder, you push deeper into the forest. Your feet crunch over fallen branches and leaves, the distant calls of birds masking the sound of your labored breathing. Hours pass, maybe days. It’s hard to tell under the thick canopy that swallows the sun. But then you find it—a hidden structure rising from the earth like the bones of some ancient creature. The entrance is narrow, almost concealed by the overgrown ferns and moss that blanket the stone. It’s like a mouth, yawning wide with darkness, and you can’t help but feel it’s beckoning you inside.

You step into the entrance, and the air changes immediately. It’s cooler, tinged with a damp, musty smell that speaks of long-forgotten places. The stairway descends sharply into the earth, each step more treacherous than the last. Your footsteps echo in the tight space, a rhythmic tap-tap-tap that fills the silence. You grip your flashlight tighter, the beam cutting through the darkness. You tell yourself it’s just the echo that’s making your heartbeat sound so loud.

At the bottom, the stairway opens into a vast underground chamber. You sweep your flashlight around and gasp. It’s a tunnel system, but not one of modern design. The walls are rough-hewn stone, jagged and uneven, carved by hands that knew the secrets of the earth. Strange symbols, worn and faded with time, are etched into the stone, spiraling and intersecting in patterns that defy understanding. Your breath catches as you step forward, running your fingers over the ancient carvings. What civilization made these? And for what purpose?

The air grows colder as you venture deeper into the tunnels. Every few feet, you find more of those strange symbols, some glowing faintly with an otherworldly light. Your mind races with possibilities—were these tunnels used for ritual? For hiding? The deeper you go, the more the walls close in, the narrow path winding and twisting like the arteries of a giant beast.

And then you hear it.

A whisper. Soft, almost imperceptible. It’s not the wind or the shifting earth. It’s words. Your blood turns to ice, and you stop dead in your tracks. The whisper grows louder, though it remains unintelligible, like a chant spoken in a language you’ve never heard. You turn your flashlight around, scanning the tunnel behind you. Nothing but shadows. Your breath quickens. You know you aren’t alone down here. You can feel it.

You press on, though every instinct screams for you to turn back. The whispering follows you, never louder, but never fading away. It’s like it’s inside your head, crawling under your skin. As you turn another corner, you see it—a faint light spilling from a chamber up ahead. You grip your flashlight like a weapon and step forward, each footfall feeling heavier than the last.

The chamber opens up into a wide, circular room. In the center, a stone pedestal rises from the ground, and on it rests a single, glowing orb. It pulses with a soft, eerie light that seems to pulse in time with the whispering. You approach slowly, your heart pounding in your ears. The symbols on the walls around you seem to shift and change, forming new patterns, twisting and curling like serpents.

You reach out a trembling hand to the orb, feeling its warmth radiate into your skin. As your fingers make contact, the whispering stops. Silence. And then, a voice, clear as day, speaks in your ear:

“Welcome.”

You pull your hand back, and the light in the orb dims, plunging the chamber into darkness. You turn around, but the tunnel you came from is gone, replaced by a solid wall of stone. Panic surges through you, and you scramble to find another exit, but the walls are closing in. The whispering begins again, louder this time, and you realize with dawning horror that you’ve walked right into their trap.

You thought you were infiltrating a facility. You thought betrayal was your biggest threat. But now you know—there are forces far older, far darker, hidden deep beneath this earth. And they have been waiting for someone like you for a very long time.
