Jenna shows you how to safely channel the immune boosting power of a moxa stick. Remember: don’t touch yourself with the lit end of a moxa stick. That hurts. Why the heck would you do that?! Have fun and be safe.

Hi Jenna, very nice video. Just a few comments: 1) You mentioned not having to unwrap the moxa stick, however as you know moxa sticks normally come wrapped in two layers. The outer layer, which is printed with information, should be removed because this helps the stick to burn smoother; the inner layer next to the mugwort herb is plain with no printing and must remain intact. 2) I like to use a candle to light the moxa stick because often times it will take 10-15 seconds or more to get the stick lit properly, especially when relighting a previously used stick. 3) I think it is worth mentioning that the acupuncture point you are demonstrating as the target of moxa warming is called Stomach 36 and as you explain is very good for boosting immunity and regulating digestive function. Other often used clinical points with moxabustion include Spleen 6 (digestive function, menstrual regulation), Ren 12 (digestive function), and Ren 4 through 6 (overall energy boost, menstrual regulation). 4) The tip of the moxa stick should hover about 1-2 inches from the skin surface and generally be moving to distribute the warming effect and prevent burning. I like to use my off hand to regulate skin temperature by placing my fingers on the surface to cool the skin if it gets too warm. The idea is not to heat up the surface but to allow the heat to penetrate deep below the surface of the skin. 5) If done properly, a few minutes on each area is sufficient, however times can be shorter or longer depending on your preference. Just be careful not to burn yourself. This should never feel painful; on the contrary, it should feel comfortable and soothing. 6) Stomach 36 is bilateral so moxa can be used on both legs for greater effect. Same applies to Spleen 6; the Ren points meanwhile are on the midline so there is only one of each. Ok cheers.
