When my husband and I first started dating he said he was allergic to cats; I told him the cat was here first... He started taking antihistamine everyday, 8 years later we are all still together. The cat and I decided to keep him.

When I first started fostering cats, I was horribly allergic. So much sneezing, congestion, and itchiness. But after a few weeks and daily antihistamines, my symptoms subsided. I eventually forgot to take the allergy medicine and I didn't have any allergic reaction at all. I'm so happy!

Plot twist: Drummer was never allergic, he was simply inspired to play better when Jackson was in his underwear.

As a person who had severe allergies to cats (still allergic to most). The allergy shots worked wonders for me too. I now have a little Siamese as a roomie.

Ended up being allergic to cat litter dust. Switched to pellet litter, and got an air purifier. All good now :)

I was told my whole life that I was allergic to cats because I played with a stray cat as a kid and broke out. Turns out I'm actually allergic to fleabites

I was deathly allergic to cats, I thought, until 2013 and I met my soulmate: a tortie named Blossom. Figured out that as long as her box is clean, and she is keeping herself clean, I don’t have any problem. We have three cats now, and life is GREAT.

I remember getting a new cat and we found out I might be allergic to her. So I did the only sane thing. Drug myself up on allergy meds because I refuse to give up cats.

I'm severely allergic to cats and my Siberian cat Stormageddon is a dream come true for me. I had allergy shots when I was in high school, which helped somewhat, but I still can't be around most cats for more than a few hours. I'm on an inhaled steroid for my asthma and a nose spray and that takes care of any symptoms Stormy causes.

It's true that there is no such thing as a pefectly allergy free cat. Still, compared to most cats, Siberians produce a lower level of Fel D1, the protein that causes most cat allergies. Stormy's breeders understood that there is no way to garuntee that a kitten wouldn't aggravate my allergies and did everything they could to make sure Stormy and I were a good fit. They let me spend time with Stormy's parents before I put down a deposit. When they didn't bother my allergies at all I was pretty confident it would work out. Just in case, we had an agreement that if my allergies turned out to be a problem (which takes at most a few days to notice) I would return her to the breeders to be rehomed with the next person/family on their waiting list.

Thankfully that wasn't necessary and today I can (and do) stuff my face in her voluminous fluff and it doesn't aggravate my allergies at all! As a child I thought I would never be able to live with a cat and it broke my heart. I am so grateful to have her in my life. Of course I support giving a home to a shelter cat before buying a purebred, but for me living with a rescue cat isn't possible. Living with a Siberian is.

I had a cat for 18 years and I suffered greatly. When she passed I said no more cats. I got a dog instead. Well 3 weeks ago the sweetest little boy showed up at my house needing some TLC and the rest is history. So, 10 years later here we go again. Never say never. Also, I still have the dog. ❤️❤️❤️

One BIG thing he missed is that some people may think their allergic to cats are really allergic to the dust in the cat litter, changing to a pine pellet (plus many other options) for example changes things overnight. Aside from that this is good for someone who thinks their allergic to cats can get some answers from. I can’t imagine ever rehoming a cat unless it was unnecessarily violent. People should expose themselves to a cat before getting one to know ahead of time what the potential cat owner is getting themselves into!

My wife is allergic to cats. But, we had a cat for 17 years. After a while she, my wife, acquired tolerance to our cat. I did several of the items on your list.

My cat's vet was terribly allergic to cats, imagine that!!! She got the vaccine shots for two or three years and it worked. Now she's got two cats living at the vet's.

As a child, I had serious allergies to cats. Throat would close, I’d be covered in hives, and my eyes would swell and create this mucusy film that I could peel off. But I adored my neighbours cats too much and came home a weezy, itching mess constantly. Almost 30 now and a close friend has two cats who also just adore being close to people. But as an adult, somehow my allergies have subsided and it’s just the sneezing and nose problems that can be taken care of with antihistamines. I’m thankful my body doesn’t react so severely to cats any more because they’re such lovely companions.

I’m allergic to one of my cat and not the other! So interesting

There seems to be some confusion with the term hypoallergenic and non-allergenic. There are no non-allergenic cats, but some are less allergenic, and therefore hypo (low) - allergenic. So, yes, there are hypoallergenic cats. Doesn't mean you won't be allergic to that cat but symptoms may be less or not at all. Make sense?

Just had to give away my two beautiful cats, allergies were getting out of hand and we cannot afford the shots 😢 I miss them so much.. I hope they can make them even more happy than we did.

In Sweden the Siberian Cat Association provides Allergy Test Homes for anyone who's looking into buying a Siberian Cat.
You pay a small fee of 5€, which goes to helping out cat owners that find it difficult to provide for their cats, and you go to a private Siberian cat owner and play with their cat.

I went to one recently, and they were actually Siberian cat breeders, so got to play with 4 cats of different ages to test my allergy.

They suggest going to 4 test homes to really get a grasp on your allergy, since all cats produce different amounts of protein. Hoping to get one next year 🤩🤩
