I Didn’t Believe It Until I Tried This Easy Method Myself! How To Quickly Remove Rust

This is my new video how I discovered the amazing power of electricity in removing rust from metal! Rusty metal surfaces can be a real problem, but I think, I solved this problem! In this video I’ll show you how I used an old laptop adapter and some knowledge to get rid of rust from an old metal wrench.
The process of removing rust from metal with the help of electricity is known as "electrolytic rust removal" or "electrolysis rust removal." It works on the principle of using an electric current to reverse the oxidation process that causes rust.

Here's what you'll see in this video:
🔌 Setting up the rust removal station: I’ll guide you through my the simple setup process.
💡 Understanding the science: Learn the science behind how electricity can tackle rust.
🛠️ Tools and materials: I’ll show the essentials I used for this electrifying project.
🔋 Electrolysis in action: Watch as I demonstrate the complete rust removal process step by step.
✨ Reveal the results: See the incredible transformation as the rust disappears before your eyes!

Electrolytic rust removal is effective for removing even deep-seated rust without damaging the underlying metal. It's a relatively gentle and non-abrasive method that is particularly useful for restoring antique tools, automotive parts, and other metal items.

⚡However, it's important to follow safety precautions when working with electricity and chemicals, and the process may take some time depending on the severity of the rust.

I've always used my battery charger, i never thought of using a computer cord, especially for smaller items. great idea. I'm impressed.

To anyone who does this at home, be sure to do it in a well ventilated area, as running current through salt water generates both hydrogen and chlorine gas. I made the mistake of doing this in my bedroom the first time. Definitely not a fun experience. Great video overall!

You can also boil a rusty tool in distilled water. The rust turns black (ferric oxide). Card off the loose material and spray with vinegar and allow to rust and boil again. Repeat three or four times and you now have rust resistant bluing like a firearm. (Rust bluing process). It looks nice😊

From what I know, you would get better results if you use baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) instead of salt, and use iron instead of steel as anode.

Some suggestions:

More safety surrounding your electrical equipment

Attach a metal rod on your cathode side and resist submerging the wire so you can reuse the charger's wire.

State the advantage of electrolysis. One of them being that it blues the metal and thus mitigates rust from forming as easily. This does not happen with a vinegar bath or power tool rust removal methods.

Hi,
leave 24 h in cheap vinegar, then clean with a pan cleaner (steel-wool). Same result :-)

No safety cautions explaining the voltage of the step down transformer, some poor goose with minimal understanding will plug straight into the power source and end up getting fried, you have an obligation to put maximum emphasis on safety around electricity.

Good to know!
Cheers! 🙌🏽

*quick question to ask if that circular piece of (i assume) metal can be any kind of metal, as in thickness and type?

What was the other metal that you placed with the spanner?

cool idea man! but seems like too much time is involved I just use Dremel and a wire brush! thanks for sharing what do you do with the liquid? seems like you can have a cup of coffee! LOL...

Approximately the same result will be after processing with an iron brush, using an angle grinder for five minutes. The only difference is that the tool will be more shiny, and the charger will remain intact.

Merci. Personnellement j'utilise un chargeur de batterie 12 v et des cristaux de soude.

my father do this. he uses 16v 1A. and even though it has low current it does work. the closer the polarity the faster it can get. so i recommend to have a wider storage to use dont put in cramp space. it might overload the transformer.
