That last frame shows exactly why applying a coating of healing tar is so important. Trees grow very slowly, and that cut end is just an open wound ripe for infection. Even after years, you can see the other cut is still open and the exposed wood has cracks in the end grain that will allow pathogens to enter. Coating the cut with even something like wood glue that carpenters use is infinitely better than just leaving it open for rot to set in. Pine Tar has natural anti-microbial/fungal properties that can help protect the cut face a little better than glue.

Wish I had seen this video before cutting the tree limb a cropduster hit doing a gun run on my front door, so the FAA inspector could look at the wing and propeller strikes. Left a big split in one of my best shade trees.

Do you have to cut the whole limb off? Down to the truck. Can this technique be used further out where the limb branches off again? Just to make the limb shorter and not remove it completely.
