Omg hoorah.after last weeks horrendous episode with an MRI I've finally found out why I am claustrophobic!. I jumped in a pool as a small child and had to be dragged out coughing and spluttering! I didn't think it would be this ! Now it explains it! No wonder I had the bad reaction in the MRI, I felt like I was being crushed and couldn't breath! Thank you Nik and Eva...I'll work on this now. 🙏

it's interesting isn't it how a person's perception of enclosed spaces can change. As a child we can be frightened of an enclosed space for example if a sibling has locked us in a cupboard or tries to cover us with a duvet for a joke, or we can find enclosed spaces exciting if we're playing hide and seek. In both scenarios the enclosed is neutral and just exists and has done nothing wrong, but it's the meaning we give it based on what happened to us in the moment. Excellent work as always, thank you.

I have claustrophobic for 15 years. I really want to get over this. Especially elevator and toilets. What if I die when I get stuck, like a heartattack?

I have issues with airplanes and elevators. I did have difficulties with a swimming lesson when I was a child where somebody held my head underwater. That and being Locked in my bedroom. I think looking at it this way is a place of safety Verses Not being safe will help Thank you.

But, what if your claustrophobia began as a result of the entrapment of pregnancy and a prolonged and difficult vaginal, forceps delivery that caused facial stitches, head trauma, etc.?

More than 20 years ago I felt uncomfortable on an extremely long elevator.
At the time I figured I just wasn’t used to it.

Then, 4 years ago I had several panic attacks, e.g. in an endless seeming (9.5km) tunnel, on a ski lift, on a rather high bridge and even on normal roads that would get narrower as I went.
Places where there seemingly wasn’t any escape route and I was forced to go all the way.

Thankfully it’s gotten better, though.
Still, there is this fear that it might happen again…
