My Thoughts on Cult Mentality and Moral Dilemmas – Alison Mack, NXIVM, and Beyond

In this episode: I dive into some deep and personal reflections about the dangers of avoiding moral questions, both in cults and in society at large. Drawing from my own experiences with NXIVM, I talk about Alison Mack, her attempts to question her role, and how Keith Raniere manipulated her into silence. I also explore how this same kind of gaslighting happens beyond cults – in politics, social movements, and even everyday life, when we stay loyal to our "team" at the cost of our own moral compass. It’s about confronting the uncomfortable questions and staying curious, no matter where you find yourself.

00:00 - Intro Teaser: Are We the Baddies?
I start with a question that's hard to ask but essential: “Are we the baddies?” It’s a question I believe everyone should consider, whether you're in a cult, a political movement, or any group. It's the first step in acknowledging if something is off.

01:00 - Alison Mack and Keith Raniere’s Manipulation
I share the story of Alison Mack, who once went to Raniere, questioning if she was doing something wrong. Instead of engaging, he turned it around on her, using gaslighting tactics to make her doubt herself and shut down her questioning.

03:30 - The Gaslighting of a Cult Leader
I explain how Raniere manipulated all of us, making it seem like asking questions was selfish and harmful to the group. This is a key tactic in cults: shutting down any critical thinking before it has a chance to take root.

05:15 - The Cult-Like Phenomenon in Society
Here, I make connections between my experience in NXIVM and what I see happening in society today. Many political and social groups do the same thing – they avoid self-reflection and don’t allow tough questions.

07:00 - The Fragmentation of Identity in Cults
I recall a high-ranking NXIVM member who, as the cult fell apart, completely lost touch with reality. It was clear how decades of emotional abuse from Raniere had broken her. Everyone around her just smiled and clapped, too scared to challenge the madness.

09:00 - Blind Team Loyalty and Moral Erosion
I talk about how loyalty to a group, whether in a cult or a political movement, can blind us to moral truths. People start defending things they would normally find reprehensible, all because their "team" must be right at any cost.

11:00 - Denying the Evil You Once Fought Against
This section digs into how groups justify or even defend wrongdoings like child trafficking, simply because it’s something the "enemy" is pointing out. It’s a bizarre phenomenon that happens when people refuse to give any credit to the opposing side.

12:45 - Health and Processed Food: A Case Study
I reflect on how even something as obvious as processed food becomes a battleground. I noticed how some people now defend it, not because it’s healthy, but because the "enemy" says it’s bad. It’s an example of how twisted thinking can become.

14:00 - Cults, Psychosis, and the Need for Self-Reflection
Drawing from my experiences in NXIVM, I emphasize the need for constant self-reflection, even when it’s uncomfortable. I saw firsthand how cult thinking can erode your ability to think clearly, and I believe it’s happening on a larger scale in society today.

16:00 - Challenging Your Own Team
In this chapter, I encourage everyone to question their own side when something feels wrong. I know from personal experience that it’s hard, and it won’t go well, but staying silent when your group is doing harm is dangerous and cult-like.

17:00 - Final Thoughts: Stay Curious
I close with my usual reminder to stay curious. Don’t get trapped in blind loyalty or groupthink. Keep asking those tough questions – even if it’s uncomfortable, it’s the only way to keep your moral compass intact.

I think the problem starts when the organization becomes a part of our identity. Then, the ego will do anything to make it survive because it is now a part of us. That's why rationality goes out the window. It becomes a survival issue.

There are a couple scenes with KR and Allison in The Vow that still gut me every time. The first one is when they are on their late night walk talking about branding and he asks her something like “What would you have liked to have been asked before your branding?” And she answers for herself and he immediately flips it around and says “It’s not all about you”. She then laughs confusingly and says “I thought you were asking me” to which he says “Oh that should be on a poster for narcissists.”
F-ing projection 101 right there.

What a time to be alive. Thank goodness there are wise and rational people left to see through the veil of gaslighting & pure evil going on in the world. Excellent insight Mark! Blessings! ❤

I think when voting for a candidate or party it's important to knowledge a party or candidate's flaws, even if you ultimately decide you need to vote for them to stop an even worse candidate. Just because you voted for someone doesn't mean you can't also protest certain actions or policies of theirs.

The key to narcissists is that they say and do to get what they want or to get others to do what they want. Questioning them as to their motivations usually leads to anger or defense and that's how you spot and out them.

This is one of the most insightful things I have ever watched. It should be required watching for every human being!

Such a singular focus drains the life out of a person. And is so very dangerous. Love listening to you, Mark. Thank you.

Nailed this inflexibility of thought phenomena I have been observing. If both sides are staunchly believing "the other is wrong" of course people stop having productive conversations and become more siloed. The real issues aren't addressed since the "sideism" (my made up concept) becomes the center focus. We can't have productive debates because you know who has decided the only arguing point is to point the finger and say "you're wrong." The current online environment also seems to make people irrationally angry when an argument they have been stewing over online presents itself in real life (even when someone is not trying to make them upset, they get hyper defensive--I have done this myself too). There's this 0 to a 100 reaction thing going on in most of us since we are online so much.

People are willing to defend things they never would have in the past just to keep the “enemy” from winning.

Ah, emotional IQ. America is sorely lacking in that. Well done, Mark. Thanks.

Can't imagine escaping a cult and then watching the entire country go down the same path. Loved DTRH though, had a big impact on me when I seen it in my teens. Keep it up Mark

Mark watch the new documentary from Russia with Lev about Lev Parnas getting out if a political cult, and how he went to prison and realized he was in a cult and had been deceived by them to do their bidding to get rid of political enemies. It’s fantastically done and the guy really knew a lot on inside corruption because he was being to, f by the cult that the other side was bad. Watch it no matter who you like. I loved it and think lev is an incredible and good guy who got used. He even said I I never thought I would be conned by a cult because he was a street guy. He is from Ukraine. It’s really a good story about redemption too, he’s trying to make things right.

Thanks for sharing Mark. I’m so, so interested in your upcoming documentary. Any new release dates? I hope the time it’s taking is not because you’re being blocked by distributors, but is because you’re spending time on the edit. Good luck :)

I cant wait till Alison finally tells her story. She probably will never get her career back but she could sell her story for sure.... Make her very own documentary like India Oxenberg did. I cant imagine giving up your career to have some S&M polygamist relationship with that troll Kieth instead. Most of these people came to NXIVM to help their careers, not to make NXIVM their career. Bonnie was smart enough not to forget that part.

The question that interests me is how to build good things in this world and also stay sane. Too much distortion everywhere. Power games and suppression. I want to create and build positive things, yet the landscapes are really hard to navigate lately.

I witnessed this all the time in the movement I was involved with 🤕
- "This terrible thing is happening"
~ "No, that's a conspiracy theory, what's wrong with you?"
- "Here's a verifiable case of it happening"
~ "Clearly it was right for that person, why would you have a problem with that?"

ashhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
