The Unforgettable Joy of Akita Love

In this video, I got the chance to go to an AKC show in San Bernadino and watch Akitas in the show ring. Akitas are such a unique breed and I really love them! If you're looking for a dog that's adorably cuddly and has a lot of character, then you should definitely consider getting an Akita.

We have 7 dogs. My American Akita is my number one. Smart but a little stubborn and easy to train. With their coats, they are a cool weather breed. I live in the mountains at 10, 000 feet and mine prefers to sleep on the cool tile floor. The size alone deters a thief from even trying. Yes, they do blow their coats every 6 months or so but I just take him to the dog wash and he comes back clean as a whistle. Very good with kids and is trusted completely. As with most any dog, they turn out as they have been trained. Mine is not aggressive but as he is uncut, I do not take him close to any other Akita males. Once the fight is joined by a 110 lb dog, it's not so easy to manage. Oh, they don't really eat, they inhale food so watching for GDV or bloat is advisable. My boy's name is Zeus and if there is a heaven, I would want him next to me for eternity.

I owned 2 Akitas I wouldn't have no other breed and as far as the hair they shed heavily twice a year. It's like bonding with Akita You take him/her out for a good walk once a week You brush them & groom them and he'll thank you for it in be loyal. Love my akita, she is a long hair has a great disposition. Have had another long hair many years ago, same thing had a super mellow and loving. They have a certain dignity always, and i am very glad to see them get more recognition, .

Cool dogs for sure. Great video with valid concerns. We live rural on acreage with 5 dogs. Two small, three giant. Our Saint Bernard, Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd all shed like crazy twice a year. Now we have gotten used to it and know that for about 2 weeks in the fall and spring each big dog needs to be brushed. But initially it was an added chore that what not look fondly at. Ha
Now I find it meditative to take one dog outside and spend one on one time brushing them. It has bonded us more too which has been great. We just relax, listen to birds and leave big piles of dog hair for the bird nests.

What's up Zeke. I had two Akita's in the mid 90's. They're one of the best family protectors that I've seen. You hit the nail on the head Bro. The coat pushed me away from the breed. I went through a lot of dogs trying to find a dog that could bring me what the Akita's did. Up till 2013 the female Akita I had was the #1 dog I had owned. I learned over the years that no matter what breed I liked some dogs are just better than others. I went through several breeds decided on the Presa. After four Presa's I finally got my hands on some good ones. I have two males at the house a 10yr old and a 5yr old. My 10yr old Presa has the #1 dog crown . He's the best dog I have ever owned. He's an exceptional dog. I hope I can get another dog as good as he is.

I lost my Akita January 6 i live on farm i train my dogs the right way. That being said i have never been more hurt more so far in my life he had his nuts never left the farm he loved me so much best dog i ever had. Thank you Sir Gunner the 3rd "GUN-GUN"

There is a lot to like about Akitas. I like Akitas size, drive, versatility and i love how clean they are. I am ready to retire and i am planning to get two dogs. Akitas are great dogs, but there are few big turnoffs for me. I would hate to deal with sheding, and Akitas are not very heat tolerant.
I already narrowed my search to three, possibly four breeds. I would love oportunity to discuss my options with you. You are very knowledgeable and usually we are on the same page regarding dogs.
Please let me know if we can talk dogs one on one.

I have a bully/akita mix. Shedding is crazy but man I love the look of him. I didn't know about Akita before I adopted my dog. Now, I love them. Intelligent breed!

I've had 3 Akitas and absolutely love the breed. My first we had before I had kids and was a bit nervous but she was awesome with my kids. Protected them like they were her own, sleeping under the crib and was super attentive when let the visiting nurse in. My next 2 were just as wonderful. Super smart and strong but beautiful dogs.

I still miss my boy.. he lived to be over 12 years old.. got to 145lbs, Was very loyal and protective, though quite aloof and independent.. most American Akitas are like that. Now I have a Caucasian Shepherd

I love the Akita, so serious, muscular, confident, and famously loyal. My top breeds are the Corso ( I have 1), The Presa Canario (Corso's cousin), the Boxer (I've had 2), German Shepard ( I have 1), and the Akita (I wish to own 1, one day).
