Doctor Reacts to House MD Aggressive Woman has a Surprising Past S1E10

Показать описание
A homeless woman is attempted to be discharged by Foreman in House MD Histories. Wilson, who has a strong reason to support this woman, vouches for her and leads House to pick up the case. That leads them to figure out who this woman really is, and question the assumptions we made about her. An entertaining, deep and thought-provoking episode of House which, in my opinion, is one of the best. It teaches a valuable lesson which I'm sure you'll be interested in.

In this episode, I discuss:

Brain tumours
Causes of twitch
Tuberculoma
Mycobacterium Tuberculosis treatment
Rabies
Hantavirus
Bat-borne disease
Diseases more common in homeless people
Homeless stigma
Changes to Foreman's attitude
and much much more!

I enjoy your inclination toward willing suspension of disbelief. You're wise enough to enjoy the ride.

Another diagnosis nailed! Your diagnostic skills do get sharpened watching shows like House despite the presence of inaccuracies. This is easily the (and your) best episode you've reacted to so far. One of the more underrated episodes too in my opinion. Even in other channels that show House clips this one is never shown - yours is probably the first. This is also Foreman's first near-death situation too. I remember watching this in med school, sobbing at the end of it.

Another one in the victory column! Well done!

1:48: "Rectal diazepam", LOL. I guess that's still better than the catheter method house used in "3 stories".

4:52: "Banana bag" is a US-specific term for IV bag used to correct nutritional deficiencies. They typically contain Thiamine, Folic acid, a Multivitamin, and Magnesium sulfate. It would be roughly equivalent to something in the UK known as a 'Myers Cocktail IV'. They're used a lot in the US emergency departments for alcoholics. :)

16:04: Had a family member go into mild serotonin syndrome because they were taking Tramadol concurrently with their daily SSRI. Most people don't think of a pain medicine as affecting serotonin, but tramadol is different than most. I guess PSA to anyone reading: be careful with your medication interactions!

19:26: I'm pretty sure that carotid massage is used in a House episode at some point as a quick measure to help with tachycardia, but I don't remember the episode. Guess we'll find it eventually!

23:31: You cut the scene where Foreman actually receives his rabies shots (understandably); it's a very unpleasant looking enormous needle into the abdomen. Is that actually how that shot is administered? I've heard varying agreements/disagreements with the accuracy there.

25:33: Yin and yang is a great way of describing the interaction between capitalist/socialist policymaking. I wish the US did a better job at understanding and employing ALL the tools and programs that we could provide our citizens.

I'm not a doctor, but this is one episode where even I got the diagnosis before House, based on the hydrophobia and photophobia.

Homeless and the poor: the enemy No 1 of US Healthcare System. I think US in general has this problem, and this episode pokes a bit into this major problem.
Congrats, you did it again, I think you'll get a couple of more episodes in this season, I have faith in that (in comparison, 5th season has the most rare zebras imo)
I hate bats, such a source of diseases, and there's some theories about they being the origin of covid too, they scare me a lot 😂

With the underlying lore of this show I’d recommend watching them closer in order or totally in order. It’s fine if you don’t though, but the ending to the show is great

You're getting better at diagnosing TV illnesses 😆 But good one. I particularly enjoyed listening to your thoughts on this one.

I love that in the show house is not godlike. He does get diagnoses wrong sometimes, and sometimes even when he get the cause, its not always helps.
In this episode for example, she was dead from the beginning.

So from my understanding of Rabies, it is very accurate that Foreman WOULD be just fine given that he didn't delay very long to get treatment. but I see your point about how it's almost always fatal once symptoms present. The discord is that symptoms shouldn't have presented in foreman that quickly.. but they just did that for the "Cool reveal" factor of having House stab him. lol
enjoying your reactions.
My favorite episode was always "Autopsy" (season 2, episode 2 or 3)

I believe a banana bag refers to a bag of IV fluid that contains vitamins and minerals in general not just potassium.

My supraventricular tachycardia was caused by what my doctor told me was crossed wiring in the heart. I had an EP study at 16, where they ablated the problem areas. It then relapsed the next summer and I had a second EP study. I started experiencing the tachycardia when I was 13.

At first, they prescribed Atenolol (sp?), because my mum didn't want both her kids in the hospital at the same time (my sister had Hodgekins). It caused my attacks to become more frequent. So I had to schedule my procedure during my junior year, where I was taking multiple AP classes, instead of during the summer. We both relapsed the next summer and were on different floors of the same hospital at the same time.

I was told that an attack is more likely if I had too little sleep, not enough food, or too much caffeine, and was also advised to avoid grapefruit and grapefruit products.

Is it possible that the additional "crossed wires" were caused by the use of protropin? I had a growth hormone deficiency and took it daily a couple of years in elementary, and then after a gap (insurance 😬), started it again in junior high and stopped taking it when I was around 16. This was in the 90's.

I suspected Rabies when she chucked the water and was certain when she was sensitive to light. The bats just sealed it for me, after that I just sat back and waited for the "medical professionals" to catch up😎

This is one of my favorites. But the diagnosis really creeps me out.

Speaking of rabies transmission through organ transplant. Check out Scrubs episode "My Lunch". Really powerful episode dealing with exactly that.

Just a minor correction. The Nordic countries are not actually ‘socialist’ to any significant degree, nor does socialism necessarily entail a robust social safety net. The Nordic countries are what are known as ‘socially democratic’. Basically, capitalist with high taxes that are used to fund that robust safety net (which is based as hell, I’m not in any way knocking on them). A truly socialist country doesn’t currently exist, but it would be something superficially similar to what we have now, but all businesses would be democratically controlled by the workers/employees. So yeah, in principle, you could have socialism without also having a social safety net. Though it’s probably a lot less likely.

I think it's Kuru that cannibals get from eating brains. Remember some book/movie mentioning "shaky hands" in a stranger being a sign that you're talking to a cannibal because they have Kuru, and you should run far far away
