Lyrics:
Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Ring out the bells again
Like we did when spring began
Wake me up when September ends

Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends

Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my father's come to pass
Twenty years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends

Wake me up when September ends
Wake me up when September ends...

This song was in my 25 year old sons phone. He died on 9-23-2014. His summers will never end. My heart just breaks everyday, but hes never gonna feel pain again. Just love. I've been raising his son, as my grandfather did for me. Hes 9 now and i recognize everyday, hes just like his dad. I got a do-over, but ive give my life for them to grow up together. Honor the tears, they cleanse the soul..

I had cancer at 12 years old in 2006. Spend my birthday in the hospital at the end of August 2006. The doctors told me & my parents that I would be able to leave the hospital at the end of September if everything was okay. I already was a fan of Green Day at the time. This song became special to me. I'm 30 right now & completely healed.
Reading all the comments from so many people who have a special story with this song shows how important & unique it is. Thanks Green Day.

Short story behind the song...

Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this song about his father, who died of cancer on September 1, 1982 when Billie was just 10 years old. At his father's funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie's room, Billie simply said, "Wake me up when September ends, " hence the title.

Pretty darn sad but awesome of BJA at the same time.

If that's true... Is pretty cool.

I was in 4th grade. My dad takes me to see my favorite band in concert. Green Day during the American Idiot tour. Almost 20 years ago. Been one year since I lost my dad already. Really has gone by so fast… Thank you Green Day for the memories

My grandma passed away yesterday. This song was playing on the radio later in the evening as I was driving back home. Never new the meaning of this song until that moment. Now this song will always remind me of her. Rest in peace abuela

Cherish every moment before it becomes a memory.

Watching this because September has officially come to an end.

R.I.P. Andrew Armstrong (Billie Joe's father, whom this song was made for). May your memory be eternal.

I returned from Iraq in August before my Company was to return home in September… I was wounded by an IED and was sent to Germany for treatment and then sent back home. This song reminds me of that time period. That was 2006!!!

Billie, the singer, wrote this about his father who tragically died in September when he was 10. He said, “Wake Me Up When September Ends”, to his mother when she checked on him after he ran home from the funeral because he couldn’t handle it. 7 years after his father passed, he joined Green Day, and 20 years after his dad passed, he and Green Day wrote the song.
People absolutely can joke about this song, I’m just explaining the meaning of the title if anyone is curious.

Edit: Thank you for all the likes! Green Day fans are the best!

Edit in 2024. Crazy how like the lyrics in this song go, “20 years has gone so fast, ” this album and song officially turn 20 years old this September 21st! 20 years really has gone so fast! Green Day forever!! 💚💚💚💚

Pain doesn't go away, no matter how many years have passed. Sometimes you forget about it and you think that you are finally alright, but it catches you.
