In Rogue One, Blue Squadron was wiped out during the battle of Scarif, originally George Lucas wanted to have both a Red and Blue Squadron attack the death star in A New Hope, during production, the blue colour didn’t work alongside the blue screens so it was scrapped. The events of Rogue One thus explains their absence.
