I ride a heavy 18kg bike with tools around town. When I get in my 10kg cheapie it feels like its worth $10000. Its all relative.

Like he said in the video he rode the cheap bike to give it a good chance. GCN did a similar video factor of weight same bike but the important thing is riding the same Watts. Weight makes a difference and when youre riding 100km distance with some serious climbs im sure there is a big difference.

Can confirm a little bit.

There's no literally difference in being faster, I own two bikes now, a Bianchi Via Nirone 7 (2018) Alloy bike that cost 1000€ and a Trek Emonda SLR7 (2019) that cost 4000€ and my times in my favorite climb are the same, but riding the Emonda is way more comfortable.

Nice video Tom, im here in South Africa i started on a Alloy Scott Aero it was 15 kg.

Now i ride a Merida Reacto 4000 2018 model.

Good video and it is true for beginers alloy is 100% i got my Provincial clothing on my alloy bike and it is the rider that makes the bike move by heart or legs 🔥🔥🔥

The difference will start to show doing that hill 10 times on each bike...🙂

Big like to you for telling the truth unlike other channels advertising super expensive bikes....

One way to look at it. If you are getting into cycling to lose weight and build up cardio, a cheaper heavy bike will burn more calories over the same distance as a 10k road bike because you will be spending more time on it if the watt output the same :) - Of course, if you want to be competitive....

Road bikes are like cars... the only reason we buy the expensive kind is to look good for other people.

You can’t do 85.3 - 75.1 in your head??

If you wanna feel more sorry for the loss of money on expensive bikes. That same Avante bike could be moded with the same components of the Supersix and it's gonna be almost on par in bike weight. So that fuels more the conclusion that no matter how expensive the bike is, the rider itself has the last word.

What about a $1, 000 entry-level bike frame with the best components vs. $10, 000 dollar stock superbike?

Realistically most people are not gonna buy a $10k bicycle. The only people that do are those who are in it for competition. Most people don't even want to pay $1k. I personally won't buy anything under $800 but also know that I really don't need anything over 2k. Usually i settle for $1500. I don't need a carbon featherweight bike.

I get flak from people for even considering $800. Lol. The general public thinks a $200 big box bike is high end compared to the $100 big box bikes....😂

Sit on a flat road for 20km into a head wind and I'm sure you will loose 5 min on that Avanti.

Quite interesting. I mean, go ahead and do the power meter which then would show a much bigger gap. However, real world would not have you looking over at your mates garmin to see the Watts he is pushing. Yes over a 150km race the efforts of the heavier bike will take its toll compared to a lighter carbon bike but then another factor comes in to it, rider fitness. If the rider of the heavier bike is substantially fitter then the heaviness is eliminated, then another factor, the wind, then another factor, racing experience in a peleton... the list goes on and on

How did you feel on the descents? In other words, would you feel comfortable slamming it downhill at 10/10ths on a $200 bike?

To me, the answer is to not buy a crap bike, but don’t feel that you need bling. (That said, I ordered my dream bike for the enjoyment of owning great gear, rather than expecting a significant speed increase.)
