A Little Wisdom Helps You Become Smarter !

When the water temperature is low in winter, yellow catfish are prone to get saprolegniasis. The reasons are as follows :

Low Temperature Stress

Yellow catfish are warm-water fish, and the suitable water temperature for their growth is between 22℃ and 28℃. When the temperature drops suddenly in winter and the water temperature is lower than 15℃, the immunity of the fish will decline, and their resistance to pathogenic bacteria like Saprolegnia will be weakened, so they are easily infected.

Body Surface Injuries

In low temperatures, yellow catfish are slow in movement and are prone to get body surface injuries due to collisions with each other or during fishing operations. The spores of Saprolegnia can invade the fish body through the wounds and then grow and reproduce in the fish tissue, thus causing saprolegniasis.

Water Quality Changes

In winter, the water temperature is low, the dissolved oxygen in the water decreases and the water flow slows down. As a result, the water quality is prone to deterioration. The incomplete decomposition of organic matter in the water will produce harmful substances such as ammonia nitrogen and nitrite, which will put the fish in a stressed state and at the same time provide a suitable environment for the growth of Saprolegnia.

Insufficient Light

In winter, the sunshine duration is short and the light intensity is weak. The photosynthesis of phytoplankton in the water is weakened, resulting in less oxygen production. This is not conducive to the ecological balance of the water body and will also affect the physiological activities of yellow catfish, increasing the probability of saprolegniasis.

In this situation, if a person can easily catch yellow catfish by simply scooping with a basin at the water's edge where there is a group of them, saprolegniasis may be one of the reasons. Saprolegniasis can make the yellow catfish feel unwell, affect their normal physiological functions, and lead to slow movements and reactions. Moreover, they may be physically weak due to the disease and thus be more easily caught. However, there may also be other factors. For example, extremely cold weather may freeze the fish, or water pollution may also make the yellow catfish move slowly and be easily caught.
