James Gunn (Co-CEO of DC Studios) returns to the pod this week to talk about his takeover of the new DC content slate, the differences between DC and Marvel, and all the pressure that comes with creating a new Superman film. James goes back and discusses the impact that creating Guardians of the Galaxy had on his career and how ‘allowing himself to give a s***’ was a large catalyst to its success. We also talk about embarrassing Chris Pratt moments, whether or not there are too many superhero films, and the future of Superman’s bald headed villain.

I hope Gunn makes the DCU into something awesome. But I’m going to set my expectations to non-existent so I’ve got no room to be disappointed if nothing good materializes.

2:45 why is this section titled “working with Peter Dinklage?” It’s Peter Safran

I think success for DC all comes down how stable Warner and it’s parent company remains. Up to now it seems there’s a new management structure every day.

From what he said, he can’t do creative plans and financial plans at the same time like Kevin feige. James Gunn only agree because he does creative plan of projects and Peter only do financial plan.

I just hope these movies take a relatively modest budget to produce, allow directors to have a fair bit of creative freedom to tell a story the way they want to (and avoid the films feeling like an assembly line product like the MCU became) and most importantly space the movies out enough to give everyone enough time to make the product the best they can be while not overwhelming us with droves of half-baked content (like Disney+ is used for), if they do all that I don't see how they can fail

Despite the concerns this new DC universe could bring, I trust in Gunn. He might be the only director/creative who respects almost the hundred percent of the comicbook spirit superheroes have.

Marvel/Disney did this guy dirty but great to see he is still positive and loving his work.

I totally see Gunn's comedic slapstick sillyness humor as a great benefit most comic and comicbook character depictions. But Superman, Batman, Wonderwoman, Green Lantern or Lex Luther. I'm veeeery cautious being optimistic in his ability to get what they need.

After seeing every Guardian film, The Suicide Squad & Peacemaker I fully trust James Gunn in the making of Superman: Legacy

It would have been nice to have DC comics run their own film division and have them decide on the story for the film, who's the best actors for the roles and who's the best director to make their ideas and stories come to life. All while the WB is their partner and finances all of it.

I've enjoyed Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy (all of them), and Peacemaker a lot. Thanks for balancing a great story and great humor James!

I truly believe that Gunn is going to deliver a Superman that will meet and possibly.. possibly exceed Richard Donners original.. that is not to take away from Donner or Reeve in any way... its a good thing. Snyders vision was overly dark and it wasted a great Superman in Cavill IMO. All that being said I expect big things for this new DCU.

I think Gunn is sincere and I wish him well but I have little optimism he will be able to create what he is talking about. That could take many years and people are jaded at this point. It's much more satisfying to watch the Justice League cartoons then hope a new film series will really be excellent.

I'm honestly excited and hopeful for the new DCU. I can't wait for Superman.

He's 💯 percent right in that above all else, he is an amazing storyteller . How he crafted so much emotion from a raccoon, tree, and a superhero wearing a toilet bowl on his head. 😢😢😢 Can't wait to see what is going on next

i'm starting to see the benefit of having both Gunn and Safran in the drivers seat for DC. people generally compare Gunn to Feige, but really the parallel is more between Safran and Feige. and Feige did an incredible job getting everything lined up and organized. it's great to have someone who can do that, AND ALSO someone whose soul focus is cohesion and storytelling throughout the franchise

I hope we stick to the classic feel. Also start with the premise that the golden age heroes already exists. I remember in Batman Hush where Bruce witnesses the original Green Lantern fighting afar.

James Gunn doing Superman is odd to me because he really shines at working with characters people barely know. Suicide squad made me care about characters I thought were stupid. I wonder how he does with a such well known character
