The Foreign and National Defense Committee of the Legislative Yuan held a hearing with cabinet members Wednesday morning during the vote count in the US as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump began to take the lead. The head of the National Security Bureau, Tsai Ming-yan later stated that preparations have been made for the upcoming transition of power in the US. What about the potential impact on TSMC, which Trump has repeatedly accused of stealing American chip business? Let’s hear from the economics minister .

Kuo Jyh-hwei
Minister of Economic Affairs
It is unlikely to have a significant impact on Taiwan, especially on TSMC. As we know, TSMC dominates the advanced manufacturing process, particularly for technologies below 7nm. In this field, it is essentially unrivaled. No matter how many restrictions are imposed, they won’t be able to hinder its development.

Li Chen-yu
Economist
It’s all harmful to everyone— as long as the harm is less than what others face, that’s the key. TSMC has no competitors in its field, but our main concern is that if Trump comes back and cancels all the subsidies for US semiconductor fabs, whether it’ll affect TSMC. In fact, it would hurt Intel and Samsung. What we really fear is that Trump may stop subsidizing TSMC and Samsung, he might choose to subsidize Intel. That could have some impact on TSMC.

The expert said that TSMC’s plant in Arizona is set to hold its completion ceremony in December, and there is much public interest in whether the first overseas semiconductor fab will actually receive US government subsidies. Before Trump’s election, he had proposed raising tariffs by 10% on most countries and by 60% on China. This could also have an impact on export-oriented Taiwan.

We love Taiwan and am worried too, but we will fight to protect all Taiwanese. I will do everything I can here in the U.S.

I’m Taiwanese American and I voted for Trump. I specifically voted for him because of his past track record in approving significant defense package to help bolster Taiwan’s defense. In addition, the Republican Party in the United States is generally more collaborative with Taiwan than the Democrats.

I have full faith that Trump will collaborate with Taiwan like good friends would.

TSMC is the least of Taiwan's worries. The threat of not defending Taiwan and not equipping Taiwan to defend itself is worse.

About the direct federal subsidies, Trump probably doesn’t really understand the details of the chip business. For example, Intel receives subsidies, but it frees up capital so that it is opening factories in Ireland and the Netherlands. Arizona can do a lot to help TSM continue federal help. Most likely Trump will reduce corporate taxes and some individual taxes. That too will help. There should be a net gain. 🇹🇼💪🇹🇼

Sounds like there concerns are about free money tsmc currently gets from federal funding get axed. American Tax payer funds to foreign corporations. They are worried of losing it and having to spend building and investing on their own.

Trump values mutual benefits from each side. Deal Trump in business like so it's easier. He doesn't like political game.

Don't worry. Trump is a businessman. The best AI semiconductor manufacturer is not in the US or China, but only in Taiwan TSMC. In 10 years, Intel may take over the US market and SMIC may take over the Chinese market, but in the global market, it is TSMC. TSMC, which does not compete with customers (does not steal customer semiconductor designs) with the world's best technology, will be the best for more than 10 years.

In the USA market, low-performance semiconductors will be mainly produced by Intel Foundry. If Intel is not spun off, it will be difficult to succeed, and it does not yet have the semiconductor production technology of TSMC. The world's No. 1 USA is better than China in fabless (design, sales), but China also has considerable technology. Neither China nor the USA yet has the (production) fab technology of TSMC, so TSMC will lead the world's semiconductor production for over 10 years, and the key to the machine war is TSMC.

I voted for Trump. He's wrong about TSMC. He's talking about something 40 years old at this point. There really wasn't any stealing other than persuading Morris Chang. He most likely would have remained in the US if the US businesses and Wall Street didn't live or die on quarterly business numbers. He thought growth should be based on market share, they didn't. Look who has the huge market share.

If he wants to subsidize a US chip business so be it. It actually makes a bit of sense with Taiwan a bit east of the knuckleheads on the main land.
