My husband took a DNA test, lived his whole life thinking he was half-Thai. Found out he’s actually half Chinese. My MIL was born and raised in Thailand and spent her entire life thinking she was fully Thai, was proud of that, and was genuinely shocked. Turned out both her parents’ families were from Southern China and fled the PRC before she was born and ended up meeting in Thailand, and she never knew.

The wildest part of this story is how the godfather wanted to sleep with the grandmother.

My great grandmother lied about being French. She just didn’t want to admit she was Russian during the Cold War

I’m Native American (Arawak). I had two friends growing up, an Apache girl and a girl whose family claimed Comanche. We decided to take tests for fun. Long story short, my Apache friend and I got the results we were expecting based on our known paper records. My other friend found out they were 0% native, not Comanche at all, and her grandparents had used bribery to be enrolled members of the Comanche nation in order to access federal grants for college. Her mother is an Scottish/English woman who went to school completely free of charge using federal grant money meant for Native Americans. My friend decided to keep pretending she was Comanche because it was too hard for her to accept otherwise. They’re still enrolled tribal members.

After generations of being told we're Cherokee, even so far as strangers commenting on my "native" cheekbones, we took dna tests, and only a few of us have native American heritage and its all less than 5%. I have 0%. I'm 86% british/irish, which includes welsh and scottish.

Similar thing, we found out that my mom is middle eastern because her parents were both adopted refugees who’s documents were foraged just after WWI. They were both adopted as toddlers and had no memories of their lives and were never told of their adoptions. My grandma thought she was a mix of a bunch of things (greek, PA dutch, and some other misc stuff) and my grandfather thought he was black Irish and Scottish (He had dark hair, lighter skin and heterochromia of the eyes with one green and one hazel/brown) suddenly the very thick hair, olive skin, traditional middle eastern nose, and inability to sunburn made a lot more sense.

Thought I was Filipino and black, took a dna test and saw 50% Filipino, and around 25% Chinese. And 25% black, rounding up the percentages. Turns out my dad is half Filipino and my mom is half Chinese and I never knew

That's how it was done in the old times. Except cheating, everyone was okay with it and the donor even had a place in the kids life, probably because he cared for his offspring in the little way he could without uncovering everything. I think it's ok and everyone was happy

At least there’s no real backlash, just one big happy family.

The only problem with this is that OPs mum wasn't informed. But like even she still got to know her bio dad, I don't know. It's an interesting one.

I have a 100% Japanese ancestor 7 generations ago. I’m really curious how that came about but unfortunately my mom was adopted and has zero information about her parents.

Finding out my Mexican father wasn't lying about his grandmother being a Tamaulipas indian. I had 14% Native American. Also, that I had 0.4% Ashkenazi Jew, some "Hindi" and some African Senegal heritage.

My mom was a blonde haired, blue eyed, farm girl from West Virginia that met my dad out San Diego in the 80s. She thought she had German heritage and cried when the local Mexicans in Tijuana wanted a picture with/of her "German looks". She cried tears saying "I'm NOT H*tler waaah!"

Turns out our mother was mostly English (Manchester area) and Irish (Kil-something area).

I thought my Chinese grandpa was from Northern China, because they told me all my life he fled China via Beijing to the Philippines. Turns out, like most Chinoys, I'm Southern Chinese. In fact, 23 and Me was VERY confident all my Chinese came from Fujian.

i had been told my entire life that my maternal grandfather’s side of the family was russian, but to my surprise after taking a dna test i learned they were polish and ukrainian. i was a bit confused, but i did some research and actually uncovered a cool story ! my great-great grandpa fled minsk, russian empire, with his ukrainian wife during 1912 under a fake name. i had learned they were rich, so i assumed they fled after seeing the political tension before the revolution
