Maybe pin the red up to just below the knees and maybe an underskirt to make it a bit fluffier? Red also goes well with leather, and maybe some black accents😉

The blue dress is a dream on you. Very elegant. I actually quite like the one your mother made as well! You can always dress it up with the right accessories if you still think it's too plain. Plus, a shorter hem would be good for the more modern fast-paced dances.
