Album : Homogenic.
Written by Bjork while roaming around Iceland's destitute landscape in solitude, "Joga" is both a tribute to her best friend and an attempt to voice Iceland's spirit and geography in song. "With this song, i really had a sort of Icelandic national anthem in mind," she said. "Not the national anthem but certain classic Icelandic songs - very romantic, very proud, very patriotic. Mountains, glaciers, that kind of thing."
Director Michel Gondry spent days shooting aerial footage from a helicopter for the video, no small feat given his crippling fear of heights. That footage was taken to an animator, who recreated the landscape in CGI and fluidly morphed the scenes together. Because the technique they were employing to do so was relatively unproven, there was a great deal of worry involved; Gondry had no idea how the video would look when it was finished. "Every time we tried a technique like this one, it had never been done before," he says. "Then as others come with similar concepts, the technique gets more perfected. If you put those videos together, maybe my video would look less achieved, but i have to say, in my defense, we were going there but we didn't even know if it would work!"
